I start a new job on Monday which is in Newport Wales.
I worked in Newport for a few years, running a pub (The Victoria, Caerleon Road). Newport is practically in England (for God's sake don't suggest that though) and there is no real anti-English feeling; a little light-hearted rivalry, but none of the stuff you might get further North.

The accent does take some getting used to, but once you're attuned to it you'll be fine.

Common phrases intended to confuse us English:

"Where are you to?" (Where are you?)

"I'll be there now in a minute." (I'll be there shortly.)

"Put it by there." (Put it there.)

I once sat in a very crowded bar, the only white shirt in a sea of red, watching England comprehensively shaft Wales at the rugby on the big screen. No ashtrays or pint glasses were thrown in my direction. Well, just the one ashtray - but it was plastic.

Aye, to be fair, the main problem in Newport (and to a lesser extent, Cardiff), is the Valley Commandos coming into town of a Friday/Saturday night.

simply add "is it?" to the end of every sentence and they will assume you are a native speaker

Newport, oh dear oh dear
What ever you do do not go on a night out in the town. I'm 19 so have an excuse but over the age of 25 say you will absolutely hate it.
In all fairness, we welsh are not that bad!, we do like the "banter" in work but it is all equal.
My boss is English and i work in an ex mining town so very proud Welsh up here and the only time the fact he is English gets mentioned is when we trounce you lot at rugby( every six nations)
I'm only 10 miles away from Newport so if you need any information on the place just ask!

Smiler.

Get hold of all of Max Boyces' stand up stuff & learn it verbatim. Practice the accent in you lunch break & at the earliest opportunity down the pub, let rip with a classic (like the pig in the bath).

Oh, and whatever you do, don't marry a Welsh woman.

There's a reason their national symbol is a dragon you know...

yes

I came very close.

Well, she actually grew up in the Forest of Dean, but that has its own charms anyway.

Oh, I don't know - most of them have remarkably large assets.

She had already kicked me out, see, look you isnet?

As far as I was concerned that was it - game over.

A few months down the line and she finds out I was filling in one of her best friends and goes intercontinental ballistic nuclear batst bonkers mental.

Things got very very nasty, unnecessarily so.

You'll be fine once you understand our unusual way of stringing sentences together.
Just remeber these simple translations:

Where to by are you? = Where are you?
I'll do it now in a minute. = I'll do it now.
I'll do it later, now. = I'll do it later.
Tamping, livid, spewing = Angry
Steaming, 'anging = Drunk
Daps = Trainers
Cwtch = Cuddle

I know some of these are very stereotypical, but they do actually get used!

Also a very strange habit I've noticed some have is to insert the word "do" into a sentence for no reason. But it is pronounced as "duh".

"I like going into town, they have good offers" becomes "I duh like going into town, they do have good offers they do"

Newport isn't too bad, it is very multi-cultural, so the "Welshness" has been diluted. Until you get past Cardiff, anywhere South of the M4 isn't that "Welshy".

South of the M4 we're mostly a friendly bunch, who are quite happy to take this piss out of ourselves. If you want to experience some real Welsh culture, have a drive up to a lovely part of the world called, the Gurnos Estate, located in the old mining town of Merthyr Tydfil.
