Apparently the Sierra Cossies were going faster than the F3000s Presumably road-legal cars trying for escape velocity.

Took the wife and boy there recently, went to cadbury world then went to see relatives in Grimsby. On comparison Birmingham is beautiful.

For the size of the city the pubs/ bars and the nightlife is dire, and I mean dire. One street of pubs some still stuck in the early 90's, and er that's it.

My mrs is from Birmingham, we haven't spent any time in the centre together but some of the outlying parts are really nice, Bourneville in particular.

You ended up on Broad Street. I suggest you try a little harder than asking the Taxi driver where's good to go next time.

15 odd years ago, my mate had a bird there, so we often used to go up on our bikes for the weekend. I remember the roads were hilaroius fun around the town - lots of elevated sectons and tunnels that were great fun on loud, noisy motorbikes! We were 'rocker' types and had many great nights in 'XL's' nightclub which used to play rock music. Things may have been enhanced for me somewhat by the fact that I ended up sleeping casually with my mates bird's flat mate too And then later in the 90's, I went up for the shopping - unsurpassed for cool stuff and designer lables. It was the only place, for instance, that I could buy 'Vans' trainers off the shelf. Then later, around 2007 onwards, I used to go to the NEC and do the Sporting Bears Dream Rides thing with my Porsch 911 - which involved spending a couple of nights in the city on my own in a B&B. After visiting the town centre and being a bit brave, let's just say it was unusual that I'd sleep alone in my B&B bed! So for me - Brum is flipping great, and has some pretty good memories!

Fashionable to knock Birmingham, but I have always liked it and it has improved a lot. Great shopping, good pubs, friendly people. Certainly better than I have found Manchester on my visits.

Used to work in the city centre in the late 90's and quite liked it. Moved away and hadn't been back for years but happened to visit twice recently.
First time i got treated to a £50 parking ticket for leaving my car in an empty (and i do mean empty) car park at 6:25pm without buying a Pay & Display ticket. Charging ended at 6:30pm so I figured nobody would be petty enough to be patrolling an empty car park 5 mins before charging ended - wrong. Welcome back to Birmingham.
Second time I was in the bullring and had the audacity to get my camera out to take a photography and was pounced upon by security and asked to leave because they couldn't be sure I wasn't a terrorist!
Add to that the high number of druggies, tramps, chavs and general undesirables, I have to say it does nothing to make me want to return - ever.

It does get knocked a fair bit, but on the flip-side the only times I have ever heard anything positive said are basically just brummies getting defensive. Maybe it is fashionable to do the place down, but generally there is an underlying reason rather than it just being victimisation of an entire city! Generally interested to hear about something good about the place. I've seen a couple of bars and a cinema on here that someone posted but tbh we have bars and cinemas in the rest of the country!

Ayahuasca said: The problem with Brum is that it was largely flattened by the Luftwaffe and rebuilt in soulless grey concrete.
Er, I think you're thinking of Coventry It's worth mentioning that Birmingham and the Black Country still has thousands of factories, not to mention Jaguar and Land Rover, and countless suppliers to these factories and to Toyota just up the road in Derbyshire. There is still one heck of a lot of industrial creativity in the area, still one heck of a lot of stuff made, one heck of a lot of people employed. I realise that none of this is regarded as being particularly fashionable, and will not register with many PHers. If we were like the Germans we'd have more respect for the area, but as this is the UK people completely overlook the importance of manufacturing. It just ain't fashionable.
