My parents house is, to be frank, "a bit of a mess" - they are most definitely not short of money or anything, it's just that my dad (retired) does not trust tradesmen at all and, although he does amazing quality work, is unable to finish any DIY job that he does.
Consequently their house looks like a ruin. It's not good, and I must admit that if I lived next door I wouldn't be happy.
However what really really gets on my tits is having people come up to me in the local pub having a go at me about the state of their place (I moved out about 15 years ago ffs!) - the other thing being that it's not actually the next door neighbours that moan, but people at the other end of the street.

ok I was kinda taking the piss posting windmills photos and wasnt bothered in the slightest. But I came home yesterday to find this. I initially thought he was building an ark due to the sheer size. It turns out to be a garage. I know there is another shed in the picture but at least that is in proportion to the house and garden. His garden is now a garage. looks a bit naff but hey nothing I can do

Have you checked on the local council website that they have planning permission for building this garage?

Basically, you are entitled to have a log cabin in your garden up to 4m (13.4ft) in height. If that cabin is over 2.5m (8.25ft) in height and less than 2m (6.6ft) away from any boundary, you will most likely need permission. The permission however, is likely to be granted as the law says you are entitled to go up to 4m in height I thank you

Less than 2.5m and it needs to be 1m from the boundary if made of 'combustible materials'

In Scotland you need to be at least 1 mtr from the boundary and it needs to be no more than 30% of your total land, or you will need planning. You may still need a building warrant, depending on the materials and type of manufacture. A wooden garage should be ok though.
