What are the origins of the abuse of ginger people? Is there a reason that red hair is mocked and seen as amusing? Is it purely a British thing, or do ginger people suffer the hair related abuse all over the world?

Was just curious as people are not mocked for having dark hair, so why pick on those with ginger hair?
