check the tyres
caravans spend a lot of time standing which can cause the tyres to become mis-shaped and they can also crack.
IIRC you can get a damp meter for checking the floors etc.

Caravans are fine, as long as they are static and not here.
We spend our lives dealing with caravans here in the West Highlands, and at the end of each summer have a get together and decide who the worst drivers are. Almost always the French and the English are voted the worst I'm afraid (I'm English BTW), who dither about and have no idea how to let cars past on a single track road. Reversing is a nightmare.
Scandinavians are best, and Germans (There's a surprise)... such good drivers.
Oh... and the Italians, they are crap too.

Caravans are great fun, ok, some people make fun of them, but any way.
Get the biggest you can tow with your vehicle.
Some thing like a 4 wheel twin axle, full size end bedroom, all made up permanent.
Enjoy.

Nigel Worc's said: Hello all. I'm surprised to find that PH doesn't have a caravan forum (unless I'm blind and I've missed it). Just started to look at some cheap 2 berth jobbies, kids are just about grown up, and wifey and I are toying with the idea. Just looking at cheapies like this ; http://caravans.autotrader.co.uk/neworused/used/ca...Anyone any advice or opinions ? G T F O!!!

IIRC you can get a damp meter for checking the floors etc. Never use car tyres on a caravan. You must use 6 or preferably 8 ply tyres - basically light commercial (vans etc). I think its because of the stresses a caravan puts on the tyres, bouncing around and the weight over two tyres. I have seen a caravan put on brand new car tyres, they lasted about 100 miles before they failed.

Caravaner here too.
Buy yourself a fixed bed option. We have one for family trips. Upgrading to an Elddis Typhon Crusader. With triple bunks for the kids.
Caravaning has taken me to some of the most tranquil places our beautiful country has to offer.

Always make sure the skylight is shut before driving away Loading the van is an art. Keep weight low and over the axle. You can experiment with getting your nose weight right to suit your car but as a general rule of thumb the car should sit level (not nose up or down) A properly loaded van with a good working stabiliser is essential. Alko stabilisers may require an Alko tow ball to accommodate the slightly different hitch.
