OK ok, I got that a bit mixed up, that's what comes of viewing these things on a phone.

But my choice and comment still stands.

Where does violence on the rugby pitch stop though? 3 punches and he wasn't sent off?! Would he have been for 4 or 5? I know they are tough guys but they are playing rugby supposedly and I don't remember trying to punch an opponents lights out as something that's part of the rules?

The Brazil player was simply drawing the ref's attention to a rather nasty foul. This is something rugby players also do, albeit without the leaping about.

Football is a global game; it involves many different cultures, for some of whom play-acting is perfectly acceptable - it's no surprise that some of this finds its way onto the pitch.

Rugby has a much more limited appeal and is mostly played by Anglo-Saxon countries, so the Anglo-Saxon culture has come to predominate.

Why you consider a vicious and unprovoked assault to be more acceptable than a bit of play-acting is a bit of a puzzle, however. Neither are part of their respective games, and can be sanctioned by the referee, but only one could result in life-threatening injuries. Yet that is what you prefer and advocate as being somehow admirable - that's a very odd perspective to take.

Punching is illegal - it wasn't spotted by the ref.
It's a clear red card, up to 6 months ban. If the opposing team didn't cite him then they can't complain, a ref can't see everything, but in this case the touchjudges should have flagged it! Absolutely no excuse for violence like this on the field, the trouble is the IRB wants a spectacle for the TV (income) and has (unofficially) told refs if they're too strict they'll not get matches.....

I bet the original video is easier to watch - the framerate of the GIF means you don't see the kid launched off the seesaw coming back down the slide.
