Does anybody do any car booting on here? More buying than selling, I know it means mingling with the great unwashed. It's become a bit of a second income to me and it's a bit of a laugh. @ Not sure if this is the right place for this topic?

We did a few last year, earnt some useful pennies, only problem was the idea was to clear out our house a bit but relatives kept giving us things to sell. Generous as we kept the money but also convenient for them and we still have stuff we didn't sell!!
Not been able to this year as I'm working a lot of weekends
After the first one I felt like quite a pro and got good at knowing when to give in on a price and when to tell someone to get lost!! Some folk really do like to try a take the piss.
Also never realised what a diverse community we lived in!! (ie a lot of languages being spoken)

I have only been to a couple and have never understood it, I hear that there are bargains to be had but I have never seen any. Anything that I could get from the back of a car/van in a field I could quite easily find for not much more money somewhere else where it wouldnt be second hand and the seller would have some comeback if they sold tat. I must be missing something as they do seem very popular and there are some huge ones around here, but I have always come away from them empty handed and scratching my head.

SWMBO enjoys a scrounge at a car boot sale.
I just can't be arsed getting up at silly o'clock to have some Billy try negotiate getting a pair of binoculars or coffee machine for 50p.
Fark that. I have better things to do with my Sunday mornings.

if selling go early have everything priced (at least in your mind) ,beware of the dealers invading your car as soon as you open your door/tailgate stick to your prices ,take plenty of change and carrier bags ,stick to your prices ,don't go on your own if selling (loo breaks/tea,bacon butty run) stick to your prices . enjoy and did I say stick to your prices ?

Went to one today for the first time in over 20 years. Actually heard myself say out loud "I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be less than here" at which point it started to rain so we headed back to the car. It even cost £1 to get in to the place and for them to let me park on a muddy field. I'm officially too much of a snob for car boot sales it seems.
We did chat to someone with a beautiful dog that we had never seen before, turns out its a French sheep dog. It was like a rug with legs. Other half did say its fur was soft but we will have to go immediately home so she can wash her hands because it was a bit smelly. Even the dogs there seem to need a wash!

Come on, someone point out what we are missing out on. What have you actually bought or sold at a car boot sale that would make me think that it is a worth while experience. Im by no means a snob, I spend atleast one Sunday a month at Dagenham market for a couple of hours buying work clothes or cheap toiletries ect.

If you like dogs then go to the weekly carboot sale at Cheddar - on Sundays and attracts thousands of sellers and buyers. The number of rare breed, interesting and unusual dogs there when I last went was bizarre. Think people use it as a good socialising place for puppies as there are lots of people and noise but they're fairly safe and still basically in a field. Anyway, carboots can be fun. Tend to end up selling stuff for less than you'd hope and buying some crap you don;t really need off someone else thereby failing to make any real income. I do scan them for rare old tools and certain antiques etc though occasionally. Bought a lovely old axe, beautifully sharp and looked after, for £5 last time. Splits wood brilliantly. Also bought various billhooks, scythes etc and a few nice bits of carnival glass. Most stuff is crap though.

Did one a couple of weeks ago, made £275
I cant be doing with the hassle of doing them reguarly and only taking a few quid so i collect stuff over the course of a year and do one big one, money goes towards my holiday. Most of the stuff i had accumulated for free, some from Freecycle that i took just because it was free then decided i had no use for it. The look of disgust on an indian womans face when i told her the "as new" shaver still in its box has been used once was priceless, she could get away fast enough

I quite enjoy getting difficult with someone trying to offer pennies for something obviously worth more!

Presumably the only reason anyone ever goes to these things as a buyer is in the hope that they'll discover a rare and valuable watch/Chinese vase/Picasso or whatever for 50p.
It did occur to me that there would surely be some money possibly to be made from buying stuff, identifying it properly, scrubbing it up, taking some good photos and then bunging it on Ebay, but so far I've never got round to bothering.
Has anyone else tried this? If so, did it work?

Did a couple about two years ago and made around £140 in the first hour of each, selling stuff that we just didn't need or want at all. Getting stuff out of the car and people were just hanging round trying to get the first glimpses of what was coming, one bloke took in interest in my jacket that was sitting on the back seat and not for sale at all. Loads of right dodgy old vinyl sold well too.

Did our first one today at Chirk , near Wrexham. It was just old tat that we were going to chuck out. Kids toys, clothes and teddy bears! Took £100 in a couple of hours and then packed up the rest, to be tipped tomorrow. All in all, it's a damn sight easier than ebay, but don't expect to get anything like the value of the kit, especially if it's tat! Amazed at the amount of ex Eastern Bloc bods there.
