I like reading inspiring quotes, unfortunately a search of Google simply turns up endless lists of clichés. The almighty combined wisdom of Pistonheads is sure to hold some gems, no?
Please post your quotes, gentlemen.
EDIT: how about this one: "Most of the shadows of life are caused by standing in our own sunshine" ?

H. L. Mencken said: The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

"Daddy?" "Yes, son?" "What does regret mean?" "Well, son, the funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done. And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, will you be sure and tell her SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!"

If I am honest I do not really get on with my dad , maybe we are too similar .
He did say something to me once which I think is incredibly wise.
" if you give people a choice , they will choose ."

I'm afraid I collect quotes for myself. These are a few of my favourites:
I never learned from a man who agreed with me. - Robert A. Heinlein
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. - Marcel Proust
Those who make no mistakes are making the biggest mistakes of all — they are attempting nothing new. - Anthony de Mello
It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. —Albert Einstein
We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about. —Albert Einstein
One of the sanest, surest, and most generous joys of life comes from being happy over the good fortune of others. - Robert A. Heinlein
Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. - Robert A. Heinlein
I said "Somebody should do something about that." Then I realized I am somebody. ― Lily Tomlin

I like a good quote quote aswell:
Be more concerned about your character rather than your reputation because your character is what you really are whereas your reputation is merely what people THINK you are.

A couple of my favourites:
Greatness is believing you can win, while being humble enough to understand you dont know everything.
It is a shame that in this society we've been taught to judge a man's worth by what he owns instead of who he is. Everything is surface, and so few look beyond it. A man will sell his soul, he will lie, cheat and steal, for money. If he has it, he can buy respect. Wear the right clothes, drive the right car, have the right friends, that's all that matters. Our lives are consumed in a selfish, self absorbed quest for possessions, the latest and the best in a never-ending cycle until the day we die. We forget what it means to be truly human. We forget the things that really matter. We lose the magic of what life should be.
I won't live by rules that make no sense to me.

It's not the number of heartbeats that matters, It's what you do with the spaces between them that's important.
