I'm sure, for a short period just after the fall of the iron curtain Canada was the worlds largest country, then once the boarders were all redrawn in the former USSR it fell to second again. Could have dreamt that though. Canada does have a lot of space, just endless wilderness it seems when you fly over it. I'm sure you could (somehow) plonk an aircraft carrier in the middle of it and no one would come across it for years, if ever. The area of the globe that Canada takes up is larger than the US but the area of the land above water line is less. There are some very big lakes in Canada

Is it because 70% of Americans have been mugged and head their passport stolen?
Just a thought.

Ask a question to some bimbo walking down the street in Hollywood, and get a stupid answer. Surprised? When I was a kid we learned enough about the UK to bore us to sleep. US was the UK, ever hear the story? It was the little island that ruled the World. But no longer does. Some of the reason is the attitude and ignorance like some posters above. In our case it was red coats in the woods but......... We are you. I am you. 75% of me anyway. 25% German. Not sure about Mexico, but for me to go to Canada, all I need is an "enhanced" drivers license. No passport. Haven't been to Mexico since I was a kid. I don't have a passport. I can easily see living my life without one. So much I haven't seen yet here. Besides, the rest of the World comes here, so it's easy to meet people from everywhere learning about their culture/country. Never been mugged. Good thing too I guess, I have guns.

I don't have a passport. I can easily see living my life without one. So much I haven't seen yet here. Which was exactly my thinking when I wrote the original post, although New York is one of only something like 5 or 6 states which actually have those enhanced driving licences. If it wasn't for the s tty weather, I reckon there's enough of the UK to stop me from getting bored for many, many years, so having the bulk of the US as one country (including every extreme of climate), it's hardly surprising that Americans don't feel the need to travel. OLDS said: Besides, the rest of the World comes here, so it's easy to meet people from everywhere learning about their culture/country. That, though, I would disagree with. You learn about individuals from meeting individuals. You have to go to a country to learn about it and its culture at anything beyond a very superficial (and often erroneous) level.

Otto said: So turning this around, how many people from the UK could tell where Arkansas is? How about Wyoming? Note these states are larger than a lot of countries in Europe, and are populated by our European ancestors, so you should of course all know this. No issue for me, but then I've travelled to 39 of the States and am adding another 4 (including WY) next month. Like another poster above I'd move to the US tomorrow if it were possible. Oh, and I could also point to Uganda on a world atlas as well! Try this and see how you fare. http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/world
