OP - sorry to hear this. I'd follow the advice so far and insist on locks being changed at the villa. Doubtful they would be boarding flights to rob you at home though.

Just do one thing. Calm everyone else down, make sure your wife, daughter and little one don't see the stress in you and make it a good holiday.

We know it'll be difficult but you need to put it behind you, sort the worst of the mess out and make light of the situation as soon as you can.

They don't need to! They could have mates over here that they post the keys to or just tell them the address - they know how long they will be away for!

Sorry to hear - we'll be going through the same place shortly so will be aware of this, thanks for posting and hope you get it sorted enough to have a decent holiday.

What bds. Try not to let it ruin your holiday, for the wife and daughter if not yourself!

Best of luck

Don't we all do that? I have a special bag that has wallets/phone/tickets/passports in it so I can access it all quickly and easily...

I'm sure Alan Sugar tweeted about this last week, someone he knew had been targeted in the same way and he named a car rental firm that were involved in the scam. Seems to have been deleted now, possibly for libel.

Me too, the one bag that stays with me (or should do) and that goes on the aeroplane with me and not in the cargo hold.

Sorry to hear about your experience OP, that' a lousy way to start a holiday. I hope the cops come up with the goods and you get some decent news to pacify your daughter with.

Very little that any of us can do at the moment is in any way helpful to the OP's plight.

What may be helpful is trying to prevent the same thing from happening again. It might not be particularly compassionate but grief over lost possessions does nobody any favours either, not even the OP. It may be a stty thing to be stolen from but in the grand scheme of things it could have been worse. What if they had decided to just take the money straight off the OP by knife or gunpoint?

I do feel sorry for the guy, and his family. I can't imagine how upset they must be at this moment in time but realistically it isn't like there wasn't anything that could have been done to prevent it. I'm not particularly good with empathetic responses, especially so if I can see how a situation might have been prevented.

Although I shall admit that perhaps my initial post could have been toned down a bit.

Really? I honestly thought almost the opposite to be honest, I always keep everything separate but I am pretty paranoid about this sort of thing happening

ETA: Misread your post a bit. Whilst I do tend to keep passports separate from cash and cards separate from everything, on the occasions where they do mix I don't ever let the bag out of my sight. Although I don't have kids, so it is a lot easier for me to do.

I can't help noticing the OP's username when reading a post about being robbed by people in a stolen car.

Unfortunate.

Err, no. I'm always surprised that people do this. I feel for the OP; what a horrible thing to happen but, hopefully, his post will help the less street-wise amongst us be a little less vunerable in future

My god, what a horrific start to your holiday Joyrider1.
Not sure what to say really apart from that I hope it all gets sorted and as swiftly for you as possible.
It has however made me infinitely more aware if, in the future, I'm in the situation of loading a hire car in a car park. I'll make sure that I'm more aware of what's going on around me.

Well done for punching one of the s. That will keep your chin up at least, I know I'd be fuming even more if I'd not managed to chin one of them.

Very sorry for you, hopefully a few here can learn from your experience and take more care in the airport. In my experince the Spanish police do not give a toss, I actually apprehended a guy in Marbella trying to pick my pocket and then watched the police walk him to the corner of the street and let him go! Similar thing happened to me in Madrid, you will probably need passport size photo's in advance and it's worth calling the consulate to check the procedure to save toing and froing with the little one in tow. Good luck and try to enjoy your holiday.

I imagine it's so that you have everything valuable on your person when flying rather than at the mercy of baggage handlers. Now clear off with your helpful comments and lack of common sense, there's a good chap!

There are some real s out there, knowing full well they'd ruin your holiday too. Hopefully you can get a few nice days of relaxation smile

Swines! You can't turn your back for a second these days.

I have to say all the passports/tickets and valuables go in my youngest's rucksack. That way I can get to it to show passports etc, and he keeps it on his back. Very few thieves would think the youngest kid had all the valuable stuff in a kiddy rucksack.

Plus it makes him feel an important part of the proceedings as he's responsible for all the important stuff. He used to be useless and always leaving stuff behind, but he guards that rucksack with his life!
