You are Chuck Norris AICMFP. Well done for that.

Sorry to hear about the luggage theft though, it's probably worth stuff all to them but has put a dampener on the holiday- s indeed.

Don't we all do that? I have a special bag that has wallets/phone/tickets/passports in it so I can access it all quickly and easily...
Err, no. I'm always surprised that people do this. I feel for the OP; what a horrible thing to happen but, hopefully, his post will help the less street-wise amongst us be a little less vunerable in future
Well, firstly, keeping all the important stuff or spreading it among many bags are both tactics targeted against a situation where only one bag from your collection is stolen. Therefore, in cases where these suggestions are relevant, if you spread the items, you've got less chance of losing the lot, but more chance of losing something. If they're all in once place, they're easier to keep an eye on, but then there is a most likely bag for these to be in - the one that looks like carry on luggage.

So perhaps if protection is paramount and convenience be damned, perhaps one option is to put them all in the heaviest case, and have that case at the bottom of the pile on the trolley. That makes it the least attractive to steal because it's harder to get to, and it is heavier so it is harder to escape with.

Unfortunately, wherever the items are, if you need to get to them anyone around will see where you get them from, so they aren't really going to be hidden.

Mine are all usually in the same place, and being worn by me in one way or another, so it will take a face to face confrontation to get them, which hopefully makes someone else in my vicinity an easier target.

EDIT: And this isn't a pop at the OP, I don't think I'm theft proof and I have nothing but sympathy, it's a lousy situation and the thief carries all the responsibility IMO. I hope they catch them.

The one good thing is that you managed to punch him in the face. Other than that try your best to enjoy your holiday. It sucks balls, but try not to let them take that away from you as well.

Hey OP, seems you're Facebook friends with my Wife.

She told me about this last night having read it off her newsfeed and it made me feel physically sick for you.

I sincerely hope you get over this and while I doubt there's anything I/we can do, if there is, let us know.

P.S. kudos for getting him square in the puss but not as much as he deserved!

I read it as in 2 bags were take, presumably his & his wife's carry on luggage & due to silly plane rules now, you often aren't allowed to take anything else inside with you (like a handbag) so everything would have to be in those 2 bags.

I hope there were still some bloody smelly, dirty nappies in one of them! biggrin

I feel for you Joyrider1. My son and his girlfriend have just got back from Sorrento in Italy where they had both their passports lifted. They had a right mess around as the nearest UK consulate had just closed down so had to go up to Rome to get replacement passports. Not cheap also.I even told him before he went to be careful, but kids, steep learning curve

As someone who travels abroad virtually weekly I stuff bits all over the place so that if something gets lost / stolen then they don't get everything, multiple cards,I even have a UK and Irish passport. But it's such a hassle when this happens, I hope your daughter is ok.

Apart from ruining your holiday, I did 'gasp' when you told how the baby change bag had been nicked. Having traveled with young ones a while back, I could think of no worse a thing to go missing.

Nightmare!

Passports, keys, mobile, other paperwork and money are always kept on my person until last week when returning from abroad, I stuffed them in my small rucksack so I could get comfortable and sleep on the plane.

After your story OP, I'll go back to keeping them on my person.

That's nice and helpful right now rolleyes
Very little that any of us can do at the moment is in any way helpful to the OP's plight.

What may be helpful is trying to prevent the same thing from happening again. It might not be particularly compassionate but grief over lost possessions does nobody any favours either, not even the OP. It may be a stty thing to be stolen from but in the grand scheme of things it could have been worse. What if they had decided to just take the money straight off the OP by knife or gunpoint?

I do feel sorry for the guy, and his family. I can't imagine how upset they must be at this moment in time but realistically it isn't like there wasn't anything that could have been done to prevent it. I'm not particularly good with empathetic responses, especially so if I can see how a situation might have been prevented.

Although I shall admit that perhaps my initial post could have been toned down a bit.
What you're saying is true...to an extent. But is there any use in pointing out the obvious?

It's like me saying that today is a Monday. It's not massively helpful to most people...because most people know it's a Monday!

I for one would be up for chipping in a tenner to help out a PH'er. If we got 50 people doing the same surely it would make it all a LITTLE easier?

yes Even dontating £5 would be helpful.

However, still have the difficulty of getting it A) Collected - folks are quick here to say aye, but not so quick to stump up the cash abnd B) to get it to them, short of posting the Villa address here & we can post it in dribs & drabs direct? With a cut off date for posting?

Thanks for the messages of support everyone, and don't worry about chipping in any money, much as that sounds like a lovely thing to do and I'm amazed sometimes by the level of support people get on this forum, but I've got the money side of it sorted now. We know the owners of the villa and they've wired some money across to the property management company so we're ok on that score.

Just spent the afternoon in Malaga (lovely...not) and spoke to the British Consulate who have given us all the relevant forms etc and we go back in next Wednesday to get passports to get us home...

Am trying now to just put it behind us, hard as it is, but trying to get my daughter to forget about it is the hardest part and the thing that gets to me most. She shouldn't have had to witness that.

As for some of the other points raised on here:

1) A valuable lesson has been learnt by me here, not to keep all valuables in one place. But as many say, until you've experienced something like this, it's something you tend to do. I certainly won't in future.

2) Locks were changed at the villa last night.

3) Locks will be changed at home as soon as we can get someone to do it.

4) No I didn't activate the tracking thing on the iPad - wish I had.

4) @Justayellowbadge, my PH username is Joyrider1 because....ahem....my wife's name is Joy :-)

What is it with Spain and thieves?! My friends little brother was pickpocketed at the weekend in Barcelona and a friends daughter had all her money, camera and backpack stolen in Malaga last week.

Have a lovely holiday OP- don't let it get to you. And get your daughter the biggest icecream you can find and an obscenely large blow up whale for the pool.
