Get him tickets to something, or take him out for dinner / theatre / whatever he might like. That's what I do - Dad's 82nd b.day was a trip to a great fish restaurant ( he's RC and was on a Friday)

Thanks for all the suggestions (including the humorous ones).
The spitfire thing was a great thought. He likes history, so if anyone has any further ideas on things involving old stuff...
