No matter how busy or interesting your work, I wonder whether working in an office has a fundamentally negative impact on men?

I can't say that I'm a man's man as such. Give me all the parts necessary to build a car and I'll efficiently take them to the dump; but I do get a sense of satisfaction when I do 'stuff' which I never get doing the thinking-based activities my employer values so highly (I may have made the last bit up).

We're many centuries away from our hunter forebears, but this working indoors not making stuff malarkey is relatively new.

What do you think? Do you think that the revolution in the work we do has been too fast for the evolution of our half of the species?

Sounds like you've missed your calling. You need to be running free out in the wild.

Uncategorically yes.

Office worker here and I feel like I die a little inside each day.

I fear that could be an arrestable offence in my case.

But in seriousness, yes, it probably doesn't help us as a species in the long run.

I may not build and hunt stuff any more, but I have a very cave man approach to half the females in the office. So I think it balances out nicely biggrin

V8mate, you've posted a lot of "existential funk" type threads recently, which is quite contrary to your usual, happy-go-lucky, cheeky-chappy personality.

Do you need a hug?

Also, in answer to your question: No, but also yes.

I say this because the only part of working in an office that keeps me (relatively) sane is the cycle in. Doing something physical means I can happily work here for 10 hours a day.

When the weather is bad and I can't, I become a really grumpy sod.

We're domesticated, IIRC, in as much our brains, that is civillised humans brains are smaller, possibly other characteristics but my small brain forgets, shared with domesticated species, in short we've domesticated ourselves.

Naturally, with my Goatee and powerfully built (ok, Fat) frame, I don't work in the office that much and I'm usually to be found on an Oil Rig doing suitably butch activities.

However, I have met several of my wifeys colleagues and they do seem to be a bunch of metro stylee nancy boys.

So, yes. Probably biggrin

Depends on your industry.

I work in an engineering design office. I am surrounded by stuff I've designed. Rawr.

Yeah, it creates soft, pink, pudgy beings. That's why I spend most of my free time making stuff or chopping wood or what have you. A bit of manual work is good for the soul.

Preening nancey boys are the dominant species now. I give us about 100 years and the male species will be phased out. Us proper men who get dirty and make stuff and only cry when the dog croaks it are the only hope when the zombie dawn rises. Try making a weapon out of your hair gel and manbags you big iron hoofs!

+1. Can't stand it. But not a lot I can do. Live in one of the highest areas of unemployment, and what I'm doing now is the only thing I'm good at, and I'm not even that good at that!! Nothing personal to my current employers at all, but I'd rather be doing something hands on and/or outside.

i don't work in an office.

i make stuff in a chemistry lab.

it's totally manly.

i got a glass splinter in my foot the other day.

occasionally things accidentally catch on fire. i get to put them out. that's pretty cool.

some of the things i use catch fire just on exposure to air or water.

and there is the risk of poisoning yourself.

it's ace.

watch out for that trip hazard by the photocopier, office boy.

I find it lucrative (well, good enough to keep doing) but dull. I do need to build some more practical skills though and stop spending evenings in front of the TV. I'm sure there will be plenty of projects to do once we move house at the end of the month though hehe
