Picked up my Jeffrey West Novikov Dexter Chelsea boots today.

They recommended half a size smaller than usual in this last, and I always thought my other JW's were just slightly big. They're just a little tight across the front of my foot. But hoping they'll break in and be just right.

Slightly darker in real life.

The thread is back on track.
Indeed it is, just look at that bloody carpet.
Love these but wouldn't be able to leave that carpet for fear of wrecking the soles.

It's thought by some to be bad luck to put new shoes on a table.

Ahh one of those old wives tales, much like bad luck for breaking a mirror etc. fair enough.

Is that the same as Jupiter moving into my star sign bringing me good luck? wink

Did anyone actually order some shoes from Austin Reed? I wonder if they will arrive? whistle
I didn't order shoes but did order some other items on Sunday. Everything is on credit card so if they don't arrive it's no drama
Snap!
My Austin Reed order has arrived with an A4 yellow memo enclosed saying they're not issuing any refunds on returned items as they're now in administration. Customer services have told me to take my unwanted item to my nearest store for an exchange....time to ring up AMEX...

Chaps, Ladies and shoe experts (note they may be different groups smile )

I really want some Chelsea Boots (for some reason) and have 4 pairs sitting beside me in the office and they don't fit! Or I think they don't fit....

What am I doing wrong????

In a nutshell, my smarter shoe of choice are Churchs and I can get away with 11.5G, 12G and 12F depending on style/last etc.

My options in Boots are very limited at 11.5 so as the vast majority of my shoes are 12F, I have tried 12F boots. They just don't seem to hug my heel enough and are too big whilst 11G is way too small.... the only 11.5G I have managed to find at vaguely acceptable money I tried and they were also too snug and the heel also lifted.

Am I being exceptionally picky and trying to find the Holy Grail? Does a perfect fitting Chelsea boot actually exist?? Have tried 4 makes and varying sizes now and seem to have the same issue with Wellies if it is any help? All the nice/decent Wellingtons I have tried have similar issues re sizing... frown

Help?

Or do I just cope with the 'best fit' as that is what everyone does?? smile

I've had the same problem. There must be trick or only people with wide heels wear them.

Uh-oh! I ordered a suit, best hope it fits well and I like the style!

I've been told mine is being delivered but no sign yet.

It's not quite as straight forward as I thought getting my money back now they're in administration.

I bought two very similar blazers thinking my least favourite would be returned for a refund but looks like I'm now potentially stuck with both.

Am reluctant to return the goods as then Austin Reed have the jacket and my money. Meanwhile have filled in a claim form that Amex sent over earlier.

Anyhow, I'll leave it there as I don't want to go off topic on the shoe thread.

at least you've got the goods. I wonder if there are instances where they have customers' money and have put a stop on dispatching goods.

The difficulty with Chelsea boots is the lack of adjustability (i.e. laces) - they fit how they fit (with a small margin for stretching across the vamp). You would have to be extremely lucky to have a RTW last that perfectly fits your feet with no adjustability.

I think as long as they hug you across the vamp and instep with sufficient space in the toe box the "looser" fitting across the heel is likely to have been engineered in for ease of removal - particularly if you have had success in that particular brand previously.

The closest I have to Chelsea boots are Jodhpur boots and whilst they do have a buckle this only pulls the front and back of the boot together at the ankle so they have the same issue with adjustability across the top of the foot. I find them to be extremely comfortable (much more so than my dress shoes) as the overall fit is slightly more generous however, this is the design of the boot and not a sizing issue which I suspect is the issue you are encountering - it takes a few minutes to adjust to how my Jodhpurs feel after wearing my dress shoes (or even my loafers)for any length of time.

I would say however, that if your heel is lifting/slipping it sounds like they may be too long rather than just wide at the heel.

Thanks for reply!

I have found some 11.5g and 11.5F ones so will try these also - then give up! smile

I would give RM Williams Craftsman a try (or Comfort Craftsman which has a softer insole and rubber sole). They come in half sizes and different widths and they fit my feet exceptionally well compared to other Chelsea boots - perhaps this is because they are made from a single piece of leather and mould to my foot nicely, I'm not sure. It did take me a while to find the right size initially but I've had several pairs since then that have been exceptionally comfortable straight from the box (especially some Kangaroo skin Comfort Craftsman which fit like gloves).

A couple of provisos - RM Williams was recently sold to a global conglomerate (I think it was LVMH) and the slide in quality appears to have begun almost immediately with boots now being made outside Australia with cheaper materials at a higher price - the usual "buy the brand and the loyal customers then jack up the price and rip out the cost" that these brand collectors use. It's a shame, but if and when you find a pair make sure they are made in Oz and look and feel like they are worth the price.

The second would be that Chelsea boots on large feet (I'm size 11) can look like boats if you're not careful as they are quite sleek and there's no lacing/design to break up the expanse of leather over your foot (the vamp). With slimmish jeans/trousers and big feet you can look a bit comical - I try to avoid lighter colours for this reason.

Good luck!

Edited to add - you can get RM Williams boots in lots of different leathers, shapes and lasts - here are some of mine, all the same size:

Got my first pair of these a couple of months ago and they are fantastic. Fit me perfectly and have been comfy straight out of the box. Made from a single peace of leather so there is only 1 seam (at the back) so little to rub against for the toes. I've got the Sandstone Craftsman (Made in Australia), my only criticism would be is they show every bump and scrape so I'm going to wear them regularly for day to day wear rather than keeping them 'for best' as they look lived in already.

I had some of the waxy ones and they were bloody uncomfortable. The sewn leather corner by the elastic "gusset" dug into my foot and no amount of wear resolved it. I tried another pair in a shop a few months ago and they too were uncomfortable.

It also occurred to me how "cowboy" they appear when compared to boots from other manufacturers.
