Having worn out my Chucks trundling around before Christmas, I picked these up in the sales. I'm not expecting family heirloom quality boots, but they seem pretty well made. I really wasn't sure about the zips when I bought them, but I'm totally sold on them now. They save a heck of a lot of time, and its not as if I'm going to be hiking in all weathers with them. I must admit that the preservative powder is taking some cleaning off, but it looks like they should patinate nicely. Not realy replacements for my Converse, I'm keeping an eye out for a pair that I particularly like.
Any ideas what I should use to clean these with? There are no instructions beyond using a little cloth to clean off the preservative powder they arrive in. I was going to use the Nik waterproofing that I use on my walking boots, or Nubuk oil, but don't want to stop the patination happening.
I'm probably going to be doing a fair bit of regular shortish distance walking - nothing extreme, but need something with decent grippy soles and at least shower resistance - so I got these Salomon Quest GTX. I wasn't going to go for anything quite so fancy, but I got a price match deal with Go Outdoors which brought the price down from £155 to £105, and I'm averse to anything with a Karrimor logo since they shipped off production to China.

I was very surprised to find them!
The leather seems very stiff and not very soft/supple. I assume over time this will improve and mould to the feet as and when the shoes are broken in.
The rubber sole might actually be useful as I'll need to wear them in the rain. Moreover, I don't have the luxury of multiple pairs of shoes and the option to let them 'rest' between wears.
The soles look like this:
Which although not elegant may be more practical.
Would like to hear from the shoe aficionados as to their opinion.
I have a pair of Church's in tan suede with similar soles which I bought mostly for point-to-points and so on. They've done well for years - those soles are very useful for the odd occasion that leather isn't that suitable. The leather seems very stiff and not very soft/supple. I much prefer a decent Goodyear rubber sole over leather. Last longer, more supple, and don't mind getting wet.
I reckon we have gone from selling hi end leather shoes with leather soles at a ration of 25:1 compared with a decent rubber sole to now around 1:25 in favour of rubber.
Our top 10 selling Loakes only have 1 with a leather sole, unheard of a few years back.

Am just awaiting delivery of my first pair of shoes from The Left Foot Company. Feet measured by laser then the shoes are hand made to suit your feet. Should be nice but will they be perfect? Should get them in week 2 of Jan. Anyone else have experience of this company and their shoes?
Very interested in your thoughts once you receive them please. Pricing is v competitive if they are good. Zad said:

I have had a pair of those Salomon boots for years, they have been excellent and still look as good as new, even after many years of abuse on rally's in Norway and Sweden, they do give excellent grip on snow and ice.Any ideas what I should use to clean these with? I also got them from Go Outdoors, they cost a lot less back then, think I paid about £60 for them on one of their special offers.
The cleat system in the laces is excellent, but you do need to pull them really tight to make them stay tied.
Also even after all those years, they are still mega stiff, Almost too stiff, but they do make them exec to for long periods of hiking!
Enjoy!

I have a barely-worn pair of Grenson brogues which seem to have stained themselves. Do you mind if I message you asking about a possible way to rectify it or maybe if I should speak to Grenson about it?
Monsieur DeGaulle, have a look on the Loake site and see if there is anything you like.
I can then give you a price, it will be around 25% off list price I guess.
Our site is down at the moment as we are changing our whole epos and website software, and have decided to do it throughout January.
