If anyone is after some Charles Tyrwhitt shoe trees, use the code Amazon30 and you'll get £10 off. Code applies to anything on their website....

Interesting point of view. I've got several Barkers, Church's, C&J and some Grenson Moccasins. I'm pretty open minded about brands and to some extent I want to experience them all. (Tricker's next I think) Although the likes of C&J feel like a higher quality product, I have not had any issues with my Barkers at all. I'm a big fan.

Whenever I have handled Loakes in the various shoe shops, they just don't appeal to me. I do like the styling on many models, but they just don't feel right to me. Perhaps I have only looked at their budget range or something, but all the leathers were corrected grain/coated and incredibly stiff. Plus, I'm not into these coated shiny leathers as I like a nice calf leather. I think I will buy some Loakes at some point, but I'm yet to find the right pair.

ETA: Perhaps I should be asking - which Loake model would you recommend for a nice brown oxford cap or monk strap in decent calf leather?
Sorry, not been on.

I would look at the Aldwych, and definitely stick with the 1880 range if looking at others from the brand, these use nice calf leathers (mostly) so no correction and will look good for years.

I hate shiny shoes, so totally get where you're coming from, but most shops only sell the cheaper Loakes which does use corrected leathers, and that can put people off as that is what they end up relating that to Loakes in general.

Here's the link...

I know this is the tan version, but gives you a good idea on the shape and leather...

I guess it's the sort of comparison I'd need to make side by side in person, because they just look very similar to Barker from the photo. In fact I think they have more or less exact equivalents.

they're from john anthony, sale section of the site. only 7 and 10 left though.

asos had them on sale a while back, i just missed out then and have been googling 'grenson sale' since. grenson still have them at full price if you want them that badly.

if they fit i have my eye on a few other pairs, i find barker a bit old mannish in their design whilst grenson seem a lot fresher without compromising on quality.
For me Grenson come up a little large. I measure a 10 but usually take a Grenson in a 9.

Thanks - just taken a look and it appears to be £10 off your whole order. Is it 'too council' to buy a few sets but one at a time? smile

Yeah they have, it is called the Lincoln from memory.
Very similar shoes.

But it was always around £70-80 more, or 1/3 more, and I never thought it was quite as nice so not worth a premium.

It's a good idea but you'll get charged £5 postage on each order

The pretty but sensible pair. smile

The 'how do I walk in those' pair. cloud9

The 'I look like a 70's hooker' pair! hehe
I prefer tartan Dr Martens.

Monk strap shoes are really growing on me. Either single or double strap.

Do people tend to wear these as slip-on or do you buckle them up each time?

Problem solved!

those shoe trees looks like a really good fit! What brand are they and what size shoe/tree do you have?

It took me ages to find trees that would fit my Barker Johnny (same last shape as yours) as the shoes were too narrow for most of the trees I tried.

How are they?

I've bought a few pairs of KG stuff online, and the quality seems to vary massively, some have been very nice, some have been utter st.
For me they look like they fall into the 'look nice but won't last' pile
they're OK if you get them marked down, online outlets and so on. I wouldn't pay more than £50 for a pair of KGs personally, and at that price bracket they're fine.

Pretty much all of mine are KG but I think the 'built to last' criteria isn't as valid. hehe They do some really nice mens shoes and I would recommend browsing/buying from the sale or from their reduced outlet site Shoeaholics as stuff on there starts from 19 quid. That way you wont lose very much if you don't like 'em!

Oh and to clear some other stuff up: thank you for the nice comments about the shoes I posted, I do it to inject a bit of fun into the 'serious brogues' conversations. wink I have never had a weird stalkery pm from anyone here, possibly because I am a long term PHr married to another long term PHr (so if amyone sends me one now it will be regarded as a comedy stunt and posted here for all to share the joke! biggrin)

Jimmm, I agree, tartan Docs are the best! smile

Can't speak for all, but I don't think you'd get them on without undoing the straps.

they're for unbuckling, but i am sure there are stretchy pretend monk strap lookalikes out there.

I thought as much.

I can't help but feel that the straps will get battered very quickly with all that flexing and pulling. Those straps will have a much harder life than a watch strap.

They're designed to be used and, just like a watch strap, you'll probably fasten and un-fasten once a day.

Don't let wear and tear put you off.
