Something a little different from me. I've had my first go at re-colouring leather boots using dye! I have a really comfortable pair of tan IKON boots but I wanted a dark pair too, so I make some! It was a lot easier (and more fun) than I thought it would be.

Before:

Stripped factory wax using acetone and first application of Feibing oil dye:

Does anyone on here have any comments regarding Patrick Cox or Oliver Sweeney shoes? Just interested...

Impressive.

I'll be interested to know how they wear.

Quick question to the shoeficionados here - I have a nice pair of Barker brogues that are now in urgent need of a hit of a re-sole.

Is it worth paaying whatever to send them back to Barker or am I fine using my local cobbler?

Depends on who the local cobbler is.

If by local cobbler you mean Timpsons, then no, I'd send 'em back, assuming the upper is still in good nick.

The upper is all good. Local cobbler not Timpsons but an indie equivalent of, I suppose.

Is there something I ought to be asking them to assess whether they are up to it? My memory tells me something about stitching rather than glueing but not sure...

What shoe is it? What sole?

I've got some Sweeney loafers. Had them maybe coming up on 3 years now! I don't wear them everyday, but they've lasted pretty well. Maybe 3-4 times a month. SOmetimes more sometimes less. They took a while to bed in, but they are fine now. If you don't wear them for a while I find they do stiffen up a bit so you can get a bit of rubbing. But if you wear them regularly they tend to stay comfy.

Can't drive in them though!

Not really spent more than £65 on a pair of shoes before, normally get them from Next.

I do a lot of driving, 20k per year, mainly city driving so you can imagine how many times I press the clutch, brake and accelerater pedals.

Becuase of this, they always split on the sole.

Can you recommend a decent £100 - £150 brand of shoe?

Nice smart black pair. I have to wear a suit for work so something stylish and smart.

I'd take a look at Loake. Though you'll probably get a deal on something like Barker, bringing them into your target price bracket.

Take a look here: http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/ where you'll struggle to find bad shoes. They also run good promotions from time to time - I had a 50% off voucher code for them last year.

One of my favourite shoes in a very long time is the Loake Gable.....

http://www.loake.co.uk/gable.html

I posted mine in brown a few pages back.

The goodyear commando type sole is just perfect. loads of flex in it and very, very tough.

I know it is over budget, but if you like the look of it drop me a PM with your size and I will see what I can do, I might be able to get you a pair for £150. I will check what size mine are, they are on a G last, so most people tend to go down a half size, I think I did on these.

I think it's this one:

http://www.barker-shoes.co.uk/nunthorpe/

Welted sole and it's leather.

Definitely worth sending back for a resole then imho.

You might even consider going with a danite type sole, I have had a few customers do this with older pairs, now the uppers are really soft they feel so much nicer to wear.
Plus coming up to winter a bit less to think about too regarding the weather.

First wearing of some new patent leather evening shoes on Saturday and they have picked up a scuff mark - what is the best method of getting rid? I have seen that hand sanitiser seems to do the trick but are there any other ways?

I like those boots (not really a shoe person).
