I'm at Tattersalls horse sales in Newmarket.

Biiiig money sale. yes
How much does a thoroughbred top dollar station go for?

100k? 500k? Millions?
I saw Sadlers Wells at Coolmore a few years back, and he was valued then at £40 - £50 million, with covering fees of around £120k (NFNF terms, I think).
It was bought in 2007 for $5 million as a yearling.

These horses are yearlings at Tatts too.

Interestingly the sales are in Guineas (= £1.05).

Coolmore told us that their sires would cover a couple of mares a day during the stud season, so that's a lot of profit (even taking into account that the same mare would usually be covered twice - on days 2 and 4 of oestrous).
Weatherbys doesn't allow AI.

The horror, the horror.

If there are public occasions in prospect when I go to Devon to see my mum I live in dread of her looming up to inspect me, a licked corner of hanky in hand. I'm fifty eight fer gawd's sake.

Guineas are traditional, and sometimes 'luck money' is too.

I used to spend a fair bit of time at horse sales, used to source horses for clients.
Thinking of doing it again now the market's picking up.

It was disappointingly small (even without lights on), and seemed to come and go quite quickly.

The radio searches valiantly for a stronger signal for Radio 2 several times between Newbury and Reading en route to Norbiton. While it's searching, all is quiet except for the the engine, the noise of the road and me singing. The trick is to try to keep time and see how close you are when the music comes back.
