cheap green lasers can be nasty as well.... Cheaper ones use infrared diodes (808nm wave length) to pump a crystal that then lases 1064 nm (deeper infrared) and then that goes into another crystal which resonated and behaves as a frequency doubler, so halving the wavelength to 532nm or green. This means these lasers can be leaking infrared as well as green laser and you cannot see the IR component. Even with googles designed to block green laser light, the IR can still get you and you won't have your natural blink or look away reflex to save you like you have with visible light.

Also while they are more powerful than the older, weaker red lasers... the eye also is more sensitive in that wavelength making them easier to see.
