I was amazed by this. That John Lewis Christmas advert that everyone is raving about - the cartoon one with the bear and the hare - is not made using CGI. It's actually filmed on a DSLR camera.

My guess is that the pot acts as a heat store, and this arrangement manages to store and then radiate more heat at table-top level.Whereas a candle's/tealight's heat just goes straight up until it hits the ceiling. There's precious little heat radiated outwards by a single flame.
