Therein hangs the tale... To me the obsession with "brand" - as opposed to "product" - is the problem.

Wasn't really meaning to point at you particularly, your post was just the nearest one to hand. Feels like I see more TNF on the high street than I do in the mountains though.

No worries, I'm aware of the popularity of said outerwear with non-hillwalkers!

Don't agree that all brands scream CHAV, certainly not the likes of North Face and Superdry up here in Scotland, they're pretty middle-of-the-road IMHO smile

Good-o. I suspect it's amplified a bit down here in Bristol. Not spotted my first Nuptse down jacket of the year yet; it normally comes sometime towards the middle of October!

Don't think the likes of Superdry, Hollister etc are particularly chavvy; just another fad / flavour of the month in my opinion.

You just reminded me actually, I think I may buy a Nuptse jacket this year, great for the cold walk from the car park to the office smile

Is it a "Chav" thing to wear a brand out of context, i.e. on the street?

Adidas tracksuit: fine for gym.

Lacoste poloshirt: fine for golf course.
.
North Face jacket (under protest!) fine for the Cairngorms...

Sergio Tacchini: fine for the tennis court.

Apple has got to be up there
As much as I love my iPhone and my mac, I have to agree with this. Anything Apple releases sees hoards (sp?) of people lining up for the latest shiny thing. Just because it's a status symbol to a lot of people. Like when iPod's came out and if you were seen with THOSE earphones...
See, as much as I dislike Apple products (or more accurately, the religious zealotry of apple fanbois) I have to disagree - everyone has iPhones, there is no particular demographic the brand can be associated with (although having said that, it is stereotype hipster).

I have a Westbeach jacket that I often wear in winter when I'm not snowboarding; am I bks going to spend more money on a dedicated 'winter' jacket when I own a perfectly serviceable one already. Same goes for North Face/Berghaus or anything like that.

People and the way they carry themselves scream "chav", not a clothing brand. A piece of clothing with a big logo can look fine when worn and carried well. You can hardly fault the brand because of the fleeting interest shown by a demographic the brand is not aimed at. If a person with chav tendencies drove a new M3, it won't change my opinion of the car because I don't carry myself like a chav so won't be mistaken for one (hopefully). I also care very little for what anyone else thinks if it's something that I like the look of. I choose based on my tastes and requirements at the time of purchase.

A nice piece from Gucci looks equally trashy on a chav as it does a wealthy person with no style and with no idea how to dress. It looks fantastic on someone who knows how to dress, as do goods of far less expense. In the right hands, luxury goods look as intended. Wear what you buy with good taste and your own personal style and you'll be fine... unless you are a chav wink

inappropriate wear of North face gear = off duty copper / soldier or Rav Wilding (unsuprising given his jobs before becoming the housewives' favourite ... )

another Rav related observation - some of his pieces to camera in Helicopter heroes make him out as a cross between simon scharma and the 'brilliant kid' from the Fast Show ...

Ok I'll bite smile

How does one wear North Face inappropriately if talking about something like a Nuptse jacket? I mean my understanding is that its a high quality coat designed to keep you very warm. Is it wrong to wear it on a coldhigh street? Must it only be worn on a mountain?

I'm not suggesting it would be something one would wear to a party, its not exactly sophisticated, but if worn for the purposes of staying warm in winter, does it matter that you aren't climbing a mountain?

I was wearing some the other day, that said I was sailing a boat at the time (I say sailing, I was really along for ballast as there were strong winds forecast).

Mind you, at one point we passed a gorgeous classic with teak decks, the crew were either barefoot or sporting Dubarry-esque boots, not a deck shoe in sight.....so you might be right.
Sounds a lovely day out!

My deck shoes have bitten the dust, you can see daylight through the soles. They weren't appropriate for sailing 8 years ago and were relegated to trudging around in. Bye bye faithful shoes frown

I would say Gucci, Prada, LV and Dolce & Gabbana:

Enormous logos / patterns
Garish colors
Enormous price

All four brands produce a lots of tat. They also make some quality items, but these are at the higher end.
There was a Fiat 500 at my local David Lloyd gym with a Gucci paint job - truly vile
Prada shoes look awful but have a red stripe so people still buy them
LV - disgusting bags with an LV logo printed 4000 times, which cost 2 grand.
DG shirts - what can I say - I am too powerfully built for these :-). Prefer a nice Hilditch and Key.
