My camping knife

Is that one of those Gerber/Bear Grylls ones?
Ive had the knife for almost 30 years. I had seen either it or something similar in the Rambo films...so went and bought it. It has certainly stood the test of time, so cant fault it on that. Not the most subtle of knives though wink

1 further year on, and the knife died whilst on Sunday whilst building a den with my little boy frown

Almost made it to 30 years frown
That's awesome, I haven't seen First Blood in over a decade yet that scene came straight back to me.

Then that picture you've linked to doesn't make sense.

On the back view there is a cut out piece in the back which is the locking mechanism that you have to push down with your thumb to close the knife.

Are you saying that is removed on UK versions ?
If it's anything like the smaller version (subcom) it has small ball bearings within the lock and these help it act like a slip joint. The frame lock is modified so that pressure on the spine of blade will close it, without having to move the lock yourself.

You also have a half way stop which minimises the risk of shutting the blade on ones fingers.

Any Boker 42 is designed to be UK legal IIRC
Spot on, there is no lock. That cutout piece is a spring that has a ball bearing on. This sits in a hole in the blade. The blade can be shut simply by pushing the blade but it would be more difficult than a pen knife to close it whilst you have it in your hand. Just about the best compromise out there in my opinion.

Assuming we're not talking about kitchen knives..

A really useful little one I picked up at the gift shop in monument valley and use daily:

General purpose for camping:

I got 2 of these for camping as they're so useful. They also have a point for breaking glass and a covered blade for rope and seatbelts, but there's no way in the world id like to be caught with this in the glovebox:

And got sent this little one for free with the above... A great little thing and razor sharp but I don't like to carry it about:

I got one of these to go in my buoyancy aid for rescue boat work,

Blunt tip so as not to endanger people, or the inflatable tubes on a RIB, and the clip keeps it in the sheath even when mounted upside down.

I hope never to need it but it might just save my, or someone else's, life some day.

Not 'that' interesting but the big one I bought as I hadn't seen one for ages and I always had one when I was younger. It wasn't expensive but it's actually quite well finished.

The two penknives I bought as tat in a gift shop in Lanzarote but I thought they were quite pretty little things.

Yeah, that's why I bought it. It's very thin. Kind'a reminds me of Aladdin's shoes.

many thanks thumbup

you may see now why I chose the name i did smile.

as mentioned, it took many years to build up - thankfully, when I started all those years ago, Spyderco wasn't very well known, so I managed to get some very good deals. It also helped that at that time, you could buy and sell knives on eBay (UK).

I collected knives that I either liked the look (shape) of, or that had interesting materials (like carbon fibre or titanium). I've never used any of them - just keep them in the safe and a few times a year take them out to admire and re-oil them.

My EDC is a little Spyderco UK penknife

ETA - this is the first knife I ever bought - in about 1989/90

thanks - those are the 'civilian' models (the smaller one at the top of the group shot is the matriarch), with the reverse-S shaped blade. designed for the US law enforcement as a 'last ditch' self defense weapon - where little/no training was needed to use one effectively - just slash and it'll dig in and pretty much cut anything in it's path. the tip really is like a razor - just take care not to drop it. a friend of mine did just that and it snapped the tip clean off.

Some nice knives on here!

I have an old knife collection stashed at a relatives house. I have no need for them any more.

Is there a legitimate way of selling these?

There are knife forums

http://www.britishblades.com/forums/forum.php

But you have to join (and pay) to sell
