Made from a single billet of forged steel, a Chris Reeve clone for about the fifth of the price.

Gentleman, have just discovered this thread and am somewhat in awe of some of the knives you collect. I too like the odd knife, one that sits well in the hand and above all is sharp for the task in hand i.e. in the kitchen when cooking. I have a liking for small eating knives, particularly when camping/walking in the mountains [alpes et al]. I currently use these two knives quite a lot, they're very simple but effective.

From top to bottom; not a knife but an interesting letter opener my son found in the South of France - you'll see the plastic blade is broken...I'm going to make a new one for him as a surprise Christmas Stocking filler. Next, a small Gerber followed by the ubiquitous Opinel. Below this is as great diamond knife sharper from Wusthof; bought about 14 years ago and puts a superb edge on the blade. Both the Gerber and Opinel are superb cheese and saucisson knives and always receive good comments when brought out half way up a mountain.

I do have a funny knife story...well, it wasn't at the time...of how I came to be arrested at Gatwick Airport carrying two 6" bladed locking french eating knives in my travel bag. It was all very innocent and accidental but the arresting armed Police didn't think so, and nor did the customs people when the knives passed through their x-ray machine; the thing lit up like a bloody Christmas Tree! The end result was arrest, some quite heavy interrogation, flight missed and a criminal record for six years. I look back now and chuckle at this wonderful life experience. The wife who caused this scenario is now an ex-wife smile

Someone bought me one of these:

Opinel survival knife.

Unlike most Opinels it is plastic, has a partially serrated blade and the handle doubles as a whistle!

I keep it in my rucksack as a 'might as well have it along' knife. It weighs next to nothing.

Congratulations, Ayahuasca. I bought one for my son in the summer. He's discovered the joys of fishing over the past 12mths and needed a good all round cutting device. His is identical except the handle is lime green and grey. They do work well...we christened the knife by gutting some freshly caught Perch from the fresh water lake; we named one Geraldine...she was delicious!

Not my style, but the fact that it's one piece takes my interest.

This my daily carry knife that gets used for everything

It's a Fox Twister that holds an edge really well and is a nice bright garish orange so that I can find it again after I've laid it down somewhere.

I also have one of those Bear Grylls Gerbers that somebody has pictured further up the page.

I wonder if anyone could suggest a knife for daily use as I've been very disappointed with my last choices (from Heinnie)

My requirements:

Sub £40 as I tend to lose them within 2 months
Must be folding with a locking blade
Blade 3" max - I use it daily and carry it everywhere - whilst a locking blade makes it illegal, 3" makes it a lot easier to justify.
Closed length 4" max - The Fox above looked ideal but the handle length at 4.5" is too big to carry comfortably in the small pocket of jeans.

My last two knives were:

Kershaw 3/4 Ton - loved the blade but the handle was terribly cheap
Magnum Techno - I was suspicious of the cheap price but after I lost the Kershaw within 2 weeks I thought I'd try it as it had a G10 handle - it's utter crap.

The Fox has a pocket clip so it sits upright when you carry it.

No problem with jeans.

I'd have a look at the Spyderco Ambitious. A 5.7cm blade with a liner lock. £31 delivered from Heinnie.

I have the Tenacious - the slightly larger version and I love it. I think it's excellent value for money and the blade holds an edge very nicely.

I have a Tenacious too - I was surprised how large it was when it was delivered and I think it's too big to justify carrying (I am 40 and have never been challenged but I think it's wise to consider it)

I've just measured it and it's 4.5" closed, it sticks an inch out of my pocket and isn't comfortable.

I've just lined up my old knifes (the few I haven't lost, Buck, Schrade etc) and I must admit the Spyderco knife is much better made - I've never been keen on it's looks but it's hard to fault the practical design or build quality.

So perhaps the Ambitious or Persistence are the obvious choices.

this is one of mine, a Bayonet of some sort..if anyone knows anymore then let me know. I think it was from WW1 but not 100%
Seeing as no-one appears to have answered the question in the two years since it was posted..................

It's a bayonet from a P14/P17 rifle made in the USA for the British. The P17 was made for US troops in a US calibre.

The blade is identical to the 1907 bayonet used on British SMLEs in WW1. As the two could be easily confused the US version had two slots cut in the handle for easy identification.

Worth about £59-70.

OK, OK, not a thing of beauty . . . . . . but . . . . . cheap as chips (or was when I bought three or four ten years ago - just looked on Ebay nad someone's asking £9.50 plus postage!!) but very effective on lines and webbing, carries upside down if you want to draw downwards, and - best of all - it's very, very hard to cut you own finger off whilst in full fight/flight mode.

I carry this in my pocket every day (took off the belt clip). Its small and only 15mm wide so not obtrusive. Mostly used for the knife which is one handed to open, unlock and close which is the best feature possible! Designed to avoid damage to oneself as well. Cost around £30 from Amazon.

IMHO, and my limited experience, they make some of the finest barrels in the world.

For the record, I carry on Opinel while anywhere near my boat, including going into a pub with it (I'm not leaving it in the tender to satisfy some stupid piece of legislation). They keep a good edge, and won't fold back and cut you if you are trying to cut something you can't see (rope around prop etc).

Nope, the old wooden ones.
They are all on the boat at the mo, so couldn't tell you the size.
Mum lives in France, so we picked them up cheap. Excellent blade in my experience.

Edit to add:
I'm telling porkies, got one here. It's a number 9.
