When I see a flick knife I see a weapon because that's what it is.
If there's no application for that knife other than stabbing people, then it needs to stay at home.
I see a flick knife and switchblade as what they are - a knife you can open with one hand - frequently essential. If there's no application for that knife other than stabbing people, then it needs to stay at home.

Or because they don't want to be helpless or a victim.
Pretty much the same as the thousands in the UK who study martial arts, boxing etc
I think we should legalise stun guns / tazers / pepper spray - as they enable people to defend themselves against multiple / stronger attackers.
Equally if I were to be attacked I'd rather they use one of those weapons than a club, bottle or knife which may kill or change my life permanently.
Give people with bad intentions and easy way of getting hold of tazers and then give them an excuse to have them in public. I understand your point of view but it just doesn't work in practise.Pretty much the same as the thousands in the UK who study martial arts, boxing etc

Instead I had to carry butterfly and gravity knives until they were also outlawed.
I now have a Spyderco flipper - they all do the same thing - open with one hand.
I could carry a sheath knife but as I move around trusses / scaffolding they would hinder movement.
Re Tazers etc - thugs already carry weapons, that isn't going to change - why not give them the ones which don't leave victims with life changing injuries ?
If you make it legal to walk around with pepper spray, tazers and the such, then criminals will be perfectly in their right to carry them around with them in public until they decide to use it.
Oh, and once you're on the ground twitching like a vibrator they might think it's also funny to stamp on your head.

You could make it illegal for anyone with a criminal record to carry them.Oh, and once you're on the ground twitching like a vibrator they might think it's also funny to stamp on your head.
Equally an older / weaker person carrying similar, would be able to come to your aid.

I own a decent selection of knives detailed above somewhere.
So it was a bit ironic that I could have drowned at the weekend due to not having a knife with me.
Scuba diving, got caught in a rope, and no way of cutting it free.
Knives can save lives.
I'm a flood rescue technician and an integral part of our personal kit is a sharp knife, ready to hand in case of entrapment. So it was a bit ironic that I could have drowned at the weekend due to not having a knife with me.

I use one of these, NRS Pilot knife. http://www.nrs.com/product/2755/nrs-pilot-knife-cl... mounted on a lashtab on my PFD, I can reach it and release it one handed, the tip is blunt to avoid damaging inflatable boats and it is razor sharp.

Protection? I don't think you need to worry about your virtue. In fact you'd probably lose your virginity much faster if you didn't have the knife strapped on your thigh.
Missed this... Its a dive knife strapped to my wrist, though it does need a lanyard, for when I go spear fishing/free diving in Australia.I have a SOG TAC auto flick knife - thoroughly illegal and so I don't carry it, it lives in a drawer. http://www.sogknives.com/sog-tac-automatic-partial...
The only time I have it on my person is when I am out speedboating, when being able to cut ropes, nylon straps etc. with one hand could be the difference between drowning or not.
The cops don't have a problem with that - one of the guys I race with is a policeman.
It's all about "Is it for sensible use and necessary, or not?"
If I was stopped and searched while coming out of a pub on a Saturday night I'd fully expect to be arrested, and rightly so.

Reindeer antler handle?
Does the blade have some kinda iridium finish or is it just a trick of the light?
It is carbon steel with a (slow-growing!) birch for the handle, brass decorations and the handle is treated with with tar oil which is the traditional way of doing it. The blade on this model is chemically blackened (not sure how). This has the added advantage of preventing rust. The blade is 8" or 21cm long. I'm pretty sure the sheath is reindeer skin, although it doesn't mention it anywhere.Does the blade have some kinda iridium finish or is it just a trick of the light?
I got it in Karasjok where they make them. Apparently the Norwegian Armed Forces' elite troops carry the same knife, but a version with finger protection.

Got a new knife the other day. Traditional Sami knife used for general use like chopping small trees, butchering, gutting etc. Sami people are indigenous people in Northern Scandinavia and a part of Russia who go round with the reindeer etc.
It's a big blade, as shown compared to my old Helle GT.
Both very nice knives It's a big blade, as shown compared to my old Helle GT.
As an aside, I tried to get onto British blades just now and can't seem to. Is it just me, or has the site closed?
