Ah, the old confusion over what "beyond reason" means. I had thought that, for the purposes this thread, we were taking it to mean that we are discussing things which annoy us, but for which there isn't really a rational reason for the annoyance, rather than things which annoy us simply to an extreme degree. Thereby rendering the words "beyond reason" to mean "without reason" in this case.
Interesting debating point.

Some people even take to mean "and I don't need a reason" and, further, that no debate or discussion is allowable on the subject of their (or indeed any) annoyance as posted on this thread. I think it would be a very boring thread indeed if that were the case.

However much of American English is also odd grammatically in the use of tenses and the full range of tenses is used far less (if ever) than in British English. The theory goes that this is largely due to people having to learn English as a foreign language upon moving to the US and sticking to the simple tenses. It would make sense as that is still the telling sign for even most of the very best speakers of English to whom it's a second language and is by far the hardest thing to learn and use correctly in everyday English.
It also explains some of the differences in spelling between the two, with some American words being spelled 'more phonetically' ( if you see what I mean ) - an example being jail/gaol .

Someone will be along momentarily to say that "High School" and "Prom" are both early English terms and not American in any way. winkbiggrin

The only upside to this new disease is the occasional Faceache post including yesterdays one of a friends (said friend gave birth quite young) daughter who is stunning and the friend is quite tiny with a huge and impressive display of chestular glandage that she some how manages to keep hidden away, only bringing them out on special occasions.

House burglar alarms.
Seriously, what fkin use are they now ?
Been woken up twice this week by one going off somewhere nearby.
If they go off during the day, does anyone actually think 'wow, there's a burglary going on there' ? No, they think 'I wish the owners of that fkin alarm come home soon and turn the fkin thing off.'

I never know what to say when answering. In the past you might have said your number, but nobody knows numbers any more just address book contacts. You might have said your name, but mobile phones are personal. So I just say "hello" these days.

Sorry if that annoys you.

It annoys me that you should think that "hello" might possibly be as annoying as "yep!?". I see the two as being utterly different (apart from their both beings words).

It's possible to have two things, one of which is more annoying than the other, yet both are annoying. They don't automatically gain parity by being mentioned together.

People who think that everything is binary or black & white annoy me. biggrinwink

Just as an aside; a little snippet of history if you will, but "ahoy hoy" was the original advised way of answering the phone in the very early days of its invention. Obviously it has somewhat fallen out of fashion now, and is now an anachronism. Which is why Mr. Burns says it, of course. It wasn't invented by the creators of The Simpsons though.

It's all part of the American attempt at world domination. Sadly, most kids these days think proms have always been around. Halloween was almost unknown when I was a kid - what next, Thanksgiving in the UK?

My daughter's "formal" as they call it in our parts, was being held a few weeks after a parent/teacher night to discuss the likelihood of A-level results. Every single teacher I spoke to had the same attitude/opinion - the girls especially were living every moment of the day in arranging their great night out and had pushed their studies completely to the side. As far as the teaching staff were concerned, they were just talking to brick walls. The exasperation was tangible.

I'll shake the hand of any headteacher who bans the fecking things.
