The guy im talking about is not totally deaf. He can hear people, if he could not hear then he wouldn't say "eh"
I'm not totally deaf just completely deaf in one ear. If someone speaks to me on my deaf side or says something when they are facing away from me or speaks with something covering their mouth when there is other noise around (so I can't lip read) then I can't understand them. No hearing aid will help me. There is nothing I can do but ask them to repeat what they have said.
Thats fair enough, im assuming you hear the comment at least sometimes if it is on the working side. I think its a conditioned response with this guy, regardless whether he hears or not. Say something receive an "eh" pause and he will respond.

My hearing is crap, put me in a noisy pub in a big crowd of people and I will not hear half of whats going on.

That probably isn't an actual hearing issue.

People who won't wear hearing aids when they really should annoy me. My Aunt will not use one so I just don't bother having a conversation with her anymore.

Spectators at a golf tournament who shout 'In the hole!' as the ball starts to move on the green. These people are usually Americans and have not really grasped the object of said game.
It's the morons who shout that when a player tees off on a par 5 that make my teeth itch.

And don't get me started on 'BA BA BOOEEE'

Indeed. I have some mid range hearing loss. Not enough to warrant a hearing aide apparently. However I often find it hard to hear what people say. Especially in any kind of noisy environment.
Is there a medical name for this "condition"? I suffer it myself also in noisy environments like night clubs, factories etc, also if the other person is some distance away. It's really annoying as I can hear a pin drop in any 'normal' environment but have to get people to repeat themselves 18 times if there's a bit of noise. irked

Centimetres and anybody that uses them as a unit of measurement!
Centimetres wouldn't exist in any country I happened to be the despotic ruler of.

Would that make you an imperial ruler?

I figured someone would have a nibble on that.

Imperious rather than imperial.

Saying "eh" not only make people speak with more celerity it also seems to encourage an improvement in their diction too.
If you find yourself a trifle deaf, then be sure to check your ears for jelly, custard and pieces of sponge.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious for those who missed it. That was me doing subtle humour, hence why I left the scissors in the background whilst taking the pic. smile
I really did do this though, it was followed up the next morning by pouring Muesli into a large coffee mug. party
I think I need a holiday as i'm annoying myself beyond reason. smile

Anyone in the medical profession will advice against researching anything on the internet - you could well diagnose yourself with all sorts!
If you do have a touch of it (and always have had) there is nothing you can do about it, it's just how your brain is wired. People who have hearing aids suffer from it too though as the aid takes in sound from all around and amplifies it as much as the person who is talking.

You misunderstand. They have, and in stereotypical fashion they are just helping the rest of us poor sods who might not quite comprehend it yet. They're so thoughtful and kind.

I have hearing loss on the left. Could not see anything and also did a MRI scan to check if tumer on the auditory nerve. It was borderline if he was going to give me a hearing aid or not.

I do struggle to hear what people are saying sometimes and miss bits on the telly. Normally I have the subtitles on as it assists me to fill in some gaps. I would have thought my good ear would do this but oddly enough it does not. And I used to have fantastic hearing. Up until my 40s I could hear the eht line timebase whistle on some tellies.
