The word 'Boffin'. Seems to pop up in poorly written articles about something scientific the author can't be bothered to get their head around. I just saw an article I might be interested in, but it started with that word so I know it will be a load of bks.

Boffins make the world go round, this obscure section of society secured all british and commonwealth scientific and technical advances between 1932 and 1957; archetypal boffins smoke pipes and wear brown dust coats, although latterly pipes have faded from fashion, then acquired a negative connotation from hipster gufftraps with an obsession with being niche. Rest assured MoD boffins still wear dust coats, although these days they are mostly white.

I'm seeing more and more shrines to lost loved ones at the sides of roads frown

Now while I do realise that someone has lost their life in a tragic way, surely the reason we have cemeteries is so that we can remember these people with a Grave or plaque where one can lay flowers.

Some of theses roadside shrines have so much stuff around them that they may actually cause another accident as drivers become distracted looking at them while driving past?
Yesterday an oncoming car strayed into my lane as they became distracted! frown

I can understand it up until the point of the funeral, but once the funeral has taken place surely these should be removed?
They do seem a bit mawkish. As you say, the cemetery would seem a far better place to leave flowers and quietly reflect.

In all honesty I wouldn't mind the roadside flowers if they would only remove them when the flowers have died. Instead every other lamp post sports a bunch of rotten brown twigs lashed in place with yellowing Sellotape and filthy football scarves.

If you want to leave some sort of tribute at the scene in the immediate aftermath, you should at least be prepared to tidy it away when the time comes.

Strangly, I live in the back end of nowhere and my DAB signal is superb and can do no wrong.

I have a Pure DAB radio alarm. It picks up the time from a radio signal. When it loses the signal it defaults to GMT so ignoring BST. So if I have set an alarm during BST it's going to be an hour late, great.

You forget, its Permier League football, therefore everybody, everywhere, obviously wants to know about it because everybody in the UK follows it...

People who pay a lot of money to go to a big sporting event (World Athletics in China) and video the big race (the men's 100m final) using a massive tablet which blocks their own view of the race. You go to watch it live with your own eyes not view it on a screen in front of your face, you'd have been better off watching it at home on your TV.

Use of the word "industry" to describe things which aren't classically "industrial".

Here are some things I consider worthy of the title "industry".

  • Making cars.
  • Mining coal.
  • Exploring for and producing oil.
Here are some things, while laudable pursuits, I consider not to be worth of the term "industry".

  • Care.
  • Tourism.
  • Entertainment.
I think the term "sector" is more fitting for these.

I expect somebody will take you up on that shortly.

I won't, because I accept that you find it annoying smile

Similar to the word "community" when nothing of the sort exists.

We have a 'railside' tribute near to us - on a country path where it passes under the branch line. Now a full ten years since the lad walked under the train, someone is still lighting candles in the lantern and adding floral tributes now and again. Time to move on perhaps?

There again in times past people built clock towers and stuff to honour the passing of family and friends - so perhaps not throwing up a thirty foot tall brick structure is a sign of progress (or a lack of skilled tower builders at economic rates).

What annoys me more is the lack of 'Labour leadership' discussion in the news...

People who "check in" on Facebook at hospitals, then won't say why they're there, even when people take the bait and ask them.
