My house (or certainly my plot) has been around for something like 100 years - there is a box file of paperwork that each owner has passed on to the next and has deeds going back to the turn of the last century. It has never had a number.

I'd certainly agree that naming a house in addition to an existing number is superfluous, but I'm not sure what I'm meant to do when my house has never had a number.

The C bloody S bloody A security system. I swear I could access my bank details easier. I just had to reset my security and they wanted:

A PIN number
A Password
The name of my favourite place
The name of my favourite singer
The name of my favourite teacher
A memorable event
A memorable date
A memorable person

FFS! 15 minutes to reset my security log in!!

And after all that they said they'd got what they needed now anyway!

The guy who ran in to the back of my car on Haydock roundabout this morning, who when I got out and asked him what he was doing, stated "sorry, I've got a really runny nose".

What on earth has that got to do with anything, you pillock. I'd been sat stationary for around 10 seconds, it's not like you didn't get chance to see me.

Best one I had was a van who nudged into the back of me in stop-start traffic. When I got out to remonstrate, he initially denied it until I pointed out that his front bumper was still touching my rear and pushing it in slightly. Then he switched to claiming I rolled back into him until I pointed out that we were on a slight downward slope and I was driving a fking automatic. rolleyes

Evidently he went to the Shaggy* School of Motoring.

Ever tried being a Delivery Driver, its a nightmare trying to find places, Sat Navs have been a massive help but they don't always get it right.
Many Houses have a number or name by their front door, which if the house is set back from the road and you are working your way down a street with parked cars, makes it really hard to find places.
Turn into Private roads and you have little chance of finding a house name quickly unless the owner gives you good instructions or there is an estate map listing the houses!
Personally I think all properties with names should also have to display a number too, and also make sure names and numbers are clearly marked at the front of the property, not just by the front door.

Many many years ago I used to be a delivery driver, and one of the favourite name-only-house-owner tricks was to have a decent size name on the gate, then leave the gate open so you couldn't read the sign from the road.

So how does that work for properties that have never had numbers? Number them as 0, -1, -2, -3... down from the houses that do have numbers on that road? Renumber all the existing houses? Create a new road name?

I do agree that when looking for a house, it's very useful being able to see which number you are at on a road, and work your way up or down to the desired number. So I'm not disagreeing with you there. But it isn't quite as simple as you are suggesting.

Guilty as changed there, yer honour. I keep meaning to get a sign made up for the gate post. paperbag

EDIT: This has prompted me to finally get round to ordering an additional house sign that can be seen with the gate open. So, thanks for that. thumbup

My house has never had a number. It is the manor house in the village and has been around for at least 500 years. I've no idea what number you would/could give it. The nearest neighbouring house is 500m away and doesn't have a number either as far as I know. The neighbours further away might have numbers but might start at 1.

You may think your Home does not have a number but the Post Office have there own numbered system for these dwellings wink

I grew up on a Private estate and the Postman told me they numbered houses in the sorting room to help them. smile Normally done on the land registry maps. smile

The other good House names are the ones covered by a overgrown hedge! rolleyes And lets not even go there when one tries to make a delivery in the dark!

Not sure how my old house in Shetland could have been numbered - it simply sat on a country road. "No. XX, the B9071 road?"

My personal favourite is a combination of the residents names. DANJAK...BOBJAN...DAVINDA...etc.

My drum is numberless, but if it had one I would go for...66 or 61. (route and highway)
