If your speedo is showing 50, you're doing 47-48mph. The average speed cameras will not get you unless your average is over 57. Holding cruise control at 57 takes me through at an average 54.8mph (GPS) and, in a 22 mile section, that can put me ahead of a lot of vehicles. If there's an incident, I might even have progressed beyond it before it occurs, thereby potentially saving me hours.

So, if lane 3 is free, please get over and let people through. You might not have heard, but it's an offence to stay on the right if you have free space on your left now.

Are you too busy gnashing your teeth to read a post? I don't care what speed you think I'm doing, I'll go by what my speedo says - is it the law that every single speedometer ever manufactured by every car maker on ever single car in history has to show 50mph when you're actually doing 47-48mph?

Yes. Get a GPS speedo and check it for yourself. Competent drivers are aware of this.

I understand you were whining about being tailgated, but I moved on from that because you sound like one of those people who plant themselves in any lane and don't make progress. I did ask if you were such a driver, but hoped you weren't. You appear to have missed that.

I'll try to get through to you again. If a truck is tailgating you, he is unlikely to be holding a speed that will get him into trouble, so you must be causing an obstruction. He would pass you in lane 2 if you were in lane 1, so that implies you sit in lane 2 when you should be in lane 1.

You'd moved on? Why? The discussion was being tailgated in roadworks when you're doing the speed limit according to your speedo. Yet somehow you extrapolated that to be sat in the outside lane doing about 5mph while the whole world and his wife are stuck behind for hours, days or weeks behind bringing the country to a grinding halt.

The original discussion didn't need assumptions about what people might do once the roadworks had ended - for my part I continue my journey at an appropriate speed in the appropriate lane. If you want to make assumptions take 'appropriate' to mean 'correct within the law, road and traffic conditions.

As for causing obstructions through the roadworks, perhaps it's just the tailgating driver behind is just being a c***.

People who leave the protective film on electrical goods. Especially when the film starts to get a bit manky. Annoys me almost as much as a wonky picture frame.

Fair enough. Get a move on, you're going too slowly. You don't have to stick to 50 on your speedo. Secondly, the tailgating truck may have a speed limiter fitted, which means your average truck may not be able to exceed a speed limit of 70mph, for example.

Thirdly. Tailgating may constitute dangerous driving.

However, you should not impede someone who wants to drive faster than you, even if you think they are breaking the limit. If you are in L2 or L3, pull over to let them pass.

And if there is no gap to pull into. And the drivers speedo is saying they are doing 50 in a 50. There only option would be to slow down to line up with a gap and hope the vehicles in lane one also slow down to make the gap big enough, then pull in. Meantime the truck driver would think they were deliberately slowing down, the vehicles in lane one would close the gap deliberately, and it all get's very silly.

Or tailgating truck drivers could just accept that cars will be doing 45-50 in a 50 due to inaccuracies on their speedos, and live with it the same as every other road user.

There is always a gap relatively quickly. It doesn't matter what the driver's speedo says. That is no excuse to impede another driver.

When you drive along you leave a gap big enough for another car to move into and both of you to have a proper separation? You leave a 4 second gap on the motorway? Or would a car moving into the gap ahead of you cause you to slow down to leave a proper gap? Something that's not supposed to happen.

My new sat nav says it's "accurate" to about 21 feet, not sure how much more accurate the speed reading on a £100 consumer piece of electronics would be compared to the speedo. The GPS we use at work has sub-centimeter accuracy, but then are speedos are calibrated radars on the machines, they cost over 10 grand mind...

I don't feel the need to tailgate people doing 45 in a 50. I just accept the tiny tiny delay as part of using the roads. Just like when trucks crash and cause motorways to be closed. It happens. It's just part of using the roads.

Average speed scameras Mile after bloody mile of mind numbing driving making sure you're doing 50 mph.

Also drivers who don't adhere to overhead motorway lane signs. Arrows telling you to slow down to 40 and move into a single lane then a load of selfish wkers ignore the signs and speed past you in the other lanes, pushing in up front when they reach the bollards closing the other lanes.
