Im not sure, I didn't really feel like interrogating her about it. Cynicism and suspicion aren't really my first reactions on hearing a story like that.

I did find it a bit odd on last night news that they was a reporter stating how the refugees were updating their Facebook status once they had been processed, hardly comes across as if they are fleeing a dreadful life.

Why? Mobiles are low cost devices prevalent in large parts of Africa as a primary means of comms.

Almost every person on those boats has a deeply tragic personal story of a life so horrific that they are prepared to give everything they own to traffickers and risk their lives just for the chance of living without fear of death.
I do not say send in the gunships but that is a big generalisation you make there , many many many are economic migrants and they all seem to be able to stump up
$2000-$3000-$4000 for the trip

that being said however it is curious how most of these poor souls seem to be men with families conspicuous by their rarity
They reckon up to 100 kids drowned in the recent capsize.

Other than the Syrian migrants escaping a hideous civil war, the next biggest group are Eritreans. They aren't just heading to Europe, there's an exodus away from a fairly desperate country into Ethiopia and Sudan amongst other African countries.

One reason for many of the migrants being young men is that the dictatorship currently operates an open-ended 'forced labour' national service system from the age of 17 often with no specific end-date. -That, the lack of democracy, food, clean water, and reports of widespread disappearences, executions, torture and detention often with people not knowing what they've done.

See here for a bit of background: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNe...

From the column, I believe Katie's opinion was: "You want to make a better life for yourself? Then you had better get creative in Northern Africa.” -That's helpful.

Katie Hopkins fiercely defends her right to free speech. But she criticises those who want to leave a country where free speech gets you locked up, tortured or killed.

Even assuming you're right (which I'd be surprised at- don't economic migrants just get sent back?) what's your point?
Are you saying if they are only coming here because their life is so st it is worth risking everything and their lives for the off-chance of getting to live on one of Europes ghettos and doing a minimum wage job that we won't do, that it's just fine to brand tehm all inhuman cockroaches and feel nothing if they die? That's more my issue than specifically categorising the migrants.

Rumblings from our EU masters they will all be given nice shiny new EU passports free to travel where they like within the union with full rights.

Any guesses on where they might want to head?

I cannot read Katie Hopkins, it's too stupid, it's too nasty and it is clearly written for a reaction. I struggle to believe she believes it herself. She is just boundary pushing in order to sell.

However, and I really am not condonimg what she says, we need to acknoedge that all of our 'help' I'm the poorest countries has been misguided. The money the west gives seems to have been spent on arms, the intervention in Syria, Libya, Iraq and others has been almost without merit, the hopeless immigration policy is worsening the issue, even if it helps it for a very select few.

If we selectively take the members of these states that are physically able to make the crossing, are wealthy enough to pay for it and who have the drive to try to change, then we will only ever make the losing country worse?

What she says about Africa having to sort Africa's problems, I do sort of see sense in. The West should cease interfering.
