As a fully functioning man I arrived at this method of cooking with the oven after I noticed the light would come back on after I had opened the door and inserted my food, I decided to set the preheat temperature higher so the actual cooking temp would be maintained after insertion.
My theory works, the light remains off after insertion, I then turn the dial down to the actual required temp and all is well.
Perfect explanation, and probably exactly what Doogz's fiancée does.
Does it really matter if the oven temp drops below what you set for all of 30 seconds while it warms back up? Total non-issue.

While we're on cooking, the total ambiguity of some recipes really rips my knitting, being an engineer. A knob, a glug and a spoon are not proper units of measure. Then there is the finger in the air cooking times and resting times. Does not compute for me, which is why my favorite cooking tool is an app called Steak Master. It has been written by a German engineer and has therefore been done properly. It has turned steak cooking into an exact science with proper heat transfer calculations. Works perfect every single time. No more ambiguity!

My best practice is to set 180 degrees regardless. Hasn't botched a meal yet!

Right.
No, it's more the approach to take when encountering someone who is clearly flying off the handle at the slightest hint of anything they interpret as misogyny.

No although I'd question whether given how much heat is getting radiated off all the internal surfaces once an oven is upto temperature that opening the door will result in any siginificant reduction in temperature at all and if so for anything more than a very short time, certainly not enough to impact on your cooking time. Unless you open the door and stand there vacantly looking into the oven for a several minutes before inserting whatever it is your'e cooking.
That's a 'no, but yes, but you're a woman so must be vacant' answer, huh?

Physics clearly doesn't apply to men whilst opening oven doors, only 'vacant' women, and Getragdogleg above.

Well done, male superiority conclusively proven (!)
Actually no it doesn't - my husband doesn't even know how the oven works - we have been married for 21 years and he has never cooked a proper meal (I am excluding microwave here)

Because I disagree, and happen to be female, I'm 'flying off the handle', or according to Doogz 'blowing a fuse'?

Clearly I expected to be flamed, and equally clearly it doesn't bother me. I don't think I'd be posting in the PH lounge if I were that easily upset, do you?

Now you've done the 'stupid' and 'hysterical' insults: you just have to cover the 'fat, ugly, old, gay, black, manhating, gold digging and single' possibilities and you can sit down for a well earned cup of tea and a biscuit. tongue out

Flamed? All I did was explain to you why your idea of setting an oven to over temperature actually makes no logical sense. Hardly a flamingis it. It's just saying "look, that's a fairly daft idea what you've been doing" which is something that you seem unable to accept without chucking your toys out of the pram.

Apologies, I didn't realise you genuinely didn't understand that:
1. Ovens have thermostats which ensure that the heat set (for example 150) is reached during preheat, at which time there is usually a light signal.
2. If the oven door is opened, heat will escape (that's why we cook with them closed) thus reducing the temperature below the desired 150 and making it harder to accurately judge cooking times.

You may not care if you have to wait longer for your food, while the oven reheats, or you may prefer it undercooked. You may indeed be ninja-fast in your opening of the door and depositing the food. laugh

Many of us, though (women and men) prefer to set the oven to a slightly higher preheat temp to allow for the drop in temperature.

(I'm going to ignore all the personal insults about me as they do you no credit).

Believe me were you not it would not make the slightest difference.

as for "all the personal insults about you" er......what? All I did was explain why your oven idea is daft. That's not generally what I'd call a huge personal insult unless you have an exceptionally thin skin.

Sharp at a tack, my Wife, pragmatic, logical and reasonable 99% of the time. Then there's the 1% which just confuses the hell out of me, she'll make the bed, just to immediately get into it - she leaves for work at 6am, I get up about 7:30, I used to make the bed, but whichever way I do it is just shades of wrongness, she returns home at 9pm after 14-15 hours on her feet exhausted, dinner is on the table ready to go - I'm good like that, then we'll head up, she'll spend 20 mins making it perfectly, mirror smooth, completely symmetrical and the second it done, she'll unfold it all and get in.
Have you ever had a dog? They do similar when they go for a snooze in their baskets, they turn around and around then trample it all down then just flop into it. What your Mrs is doing is not much different, it just a ritual she has before she goes to bed and probably helps her sleep better. I'm not saying your mrs is a dog, she's most probably lovely, it's just the same type of behaviour.

I think that a lot of the times women do/say seemingly silly things in the presence of men it is just to massage our fragile egos, is that right, girls?

That's a bit strong? "But I like you as a friend and don't want to lose our friendship" would suffice surely?
