When are we likely to get any real idea of the winter ahead - as in mid/long term forecasts for winter?

There's been a lot of long range forecasts pointing at a brutal winter.

But then again, many experts expected September to be relatively warm and calm...

Ummm. Perhaps a 'plan B' FWD winter snotter with some decent rubber might be a good idea then. Last winter in the barge had it's real moments of 'feck this isn't fun any more'.

It's Grabbiele you need to worry about more next weekend - and I suspect Humberto will appear at some point...

Looks like 21st September, and for a fair while after, might actually be rather nice, pleasantly warm by day.

So don't dump the summer thread just yet!

Suddenly I see a downside to me purchasing a RWD High Top Transit in the run up to winter....

....Although I can put literally a ton of rock salt in the back of it for ballast/recovery use and carry enough recovery/survival gear to last me a month in comfort....

...roll on winter!

Are we expecting a hurricane or something? Certainly seems like it. Very strong winds from the WSW.

Puggit posted the low pressure a few posts above. Wind circulates round a low pressure anti-clockwise, so that's why there is a stiff breeze from the SW. I'd imagine it's pretty damned breezy off Blackpool right now

That's next weekend, Humberto by name! This is just a deep low pressure between Scotland and Iceland. 100mph winds on top of Cairngorm.

First hail storm of the year yesterday. Doesn't really count though, compared to what everyone else nearby has been getting.
