The models were hinting at 920mb for the deep low inbound next week...
How does that compare to the 'super-mega-dail-mail' storm the other month? The jet stream went south, allowing high pressure to form over Scandinavia, which in turn fed easterly winds from the frigid continent and siberia.
Big snowfalls don't come from the north or west because of the expanse of ocean that is too warm. They don't often come from the south because it is mostly warmer down there (not always as my burst pipes 2 winters ago in France will attest). From the East we get the cold AND we get the ability to pick up moisture over the North Sea.
Actually not big snowfalls, they can certainly come when the precipitation arrives from the N or W and meets embedded cold - but if the prevailing weather is from those directions (like now!) then it's not very snowy.

Watched a program last night about the cold snap in 2010. They said we need winds from the east for there to be snowmagedon!! Would Sch and Pug like to comment?
Will it blow from the east any time soon?
Winds from the East are much more likely to bring snow than those from the West (the Atlantic is like a giant hot water bottle that warms the air). Will it blow from the east any time soon?
The utopia is for the Jet Stream to sink way South of the UK; a large high pressure going South off Greenland to block the low pressures that spawn off the Eastern seaboard due to the cold air over Canada mixing with the warm air over the Atlantic; a large high pressure to our North in the Arctic pushing cold air South over us and forcing Low Pressures to our South and finally, incursions from the East.
As things currently stand:
- The Jet is starting to sink South - a good thing
- Low heights are starting to build in the Arctic - another good thing
- There are tentative signs of a Greenland high - another good thing
- There is a mass of very cold air over Canada, supercharging the Jet and also fires the low pressures at us - a very bad thing
- Not much cold pooled to our East or North East - another bad thing
