Infantry. Gave me an ability to iron shirts and polish shoes, run and vomit at the same time and and cross crocodile-infested rivers with a short plank of wood, two ropes and an oil drum.
Ah yes the unbridled joy of tucking your tshirt into the shorts of a PT kit in case you had to spew. Sick in the tshirt IF there was NO choice, one drop on the gym floor and PTI or WO would use the perpetrator as a Vileda.Golden days. ( I think).
Joined the Andrew as a Tiff in '85, wanted to be an Wafu, got streamed for M.E., wanted to be a metal-basher, got streamed as a sparky, asked for GS, got sent to Dolphin, my draft chit for Guz (I'm a Janner) lasted about a year before a squadron shift sent me north to sunny-sthole Faslane. Loved it for 11 years, asked them to stop the boat and left at 12 straight into RR.
Was an Reactor Panel Operator on Swiftsure, SuperB and Traf for a bit.

`71 Joined RN at HMS Ganges (Stoker)
`72 HMS Enterprise
`73 HMS Sultan (Shore base for AMC)
`73 HMS Bacchante
`74 HMS Eskimo
`75 HMS Pembroke (Buffers Party)
`77 HMS Hermes
`78 HMS Victory (Still a Stoker)
Loved every minute of it and if I could go through my early life again would do it all again. Left the RN and joined the then CEGB working in Power Plants and have been ever since working my way up the ladder, the Andrew was a fantastic grounding for where I am today. Good times and great mates.
Old saying for forces persons:
The best friendships are built on a solid foundation of alcohol, sarcasm, laughter and a dislike of the same people.

17 years flying green helicopters, Puma, Merlin and 412. All over now and enjoying life as a (proper!) civvie at last. Had the pleasure of working very closely with all 3 services throughout my career from beginning to end, top blokes and fisters in equal quantities found in each service, IMHO.

If you where teaching at Shawbury in 1999 or 2000 we've probably flown together! You may have even chopped me off the Puma 17 years flying green helicopters, Puma, Merlin and 412. Still RAF after 15 1/2 years. Joined up as an Eng Tech El, and went through El Tech, CIS Tech and have now arrived at ICT Tech. Stupid trade name changes, the latest is to attract the kids, don't you know?!
