ecain63 I notice you are brave enough to display a rover 100 (metro) in your previous cars list. I would love to be able to ridicule you for this but I got stuck with one as a company car for six months when I ordered it for a previous girlfriend and then split up with her. In fact it was the car I was driving when I met my wife !!!!! It was made worst by the fact it was painted in a strange purple colour.
We had similar vehicle through my mot bay this morning. N regd. and it passed first time rolleyes spotless

Is this thread just for old sailors or can an ex RAF man join in?

BTW I have never owned an Aston but that hardly seems relevant on this thread. I did watch James Bond drive one tho. wink

They are truly dreadful cars. I paid far too much for it and it gave me very little credibility on the road. I blame my dad, he owned 3 of the things and he told me they were great. All lies.

The thread that I started is 'Ex Military/Still Serving Thread'. As much as it pains me to say it......."We can include the RAF'..... (Irrespective of which 5* hotel you spent your career in.....)

I picked her up when I passed out from Mechs course, so I'm guessing something like 92 to 95, left her once I picked my buttons up.

That's a cracking picture.

Just browsing the forum as I'm planning to get Mrs Rotaree a DB7 in six months time when I pick up the gratuity after 26 years. So still serving at the moment - another RN flyer who's known Bins for years, although we've never been on the same squadron at the same time.

Edit - spolling

Royal Marines officer training, 6 months in (10 days from pass out) before dropping out in favour of full time Olympic Team training.
They were not best pleased.
3 of my school mates who I joined up with are still in, 1 of whom was killed in action last year in Afgan.
What a terrible shame Steve, on both counts. frown

Heartbreaking to pull out of training at that late stage I would have thought. I assume you discussed carrying on, passing out then taking a sabatacal? The Booties are mad for their sport and I'd have thought they'd have supported you with the Olympic bid. In fact I'm pretty sure there were serving RM and Army personnel in the Olympic team. Still, all happens for a reason.
Yes it was a long and difficult decision. Especially after going through so much. The GB Team were not very supportive to say the least. They stipulated one or the other, where as the RM were trying to find as many ways as possible for a mutually beneficial solution.
In the years following I was requested to return to complete training again (although I'd have had to re-do the final 4 weeks again), but by then I was getting older (26). Now at 32 I do often wonder how life would've been different.

As for my mate Russ, sadly he was just one of many casualties of war. My other mate Andy, who was with him, was physically and emotionally scarred, had almost a year off and although spent another year in Hunter Troupe trying to rehabilitate to get back, never really got back to normal. He now works as a PTI for the Royal Anglians (and just recently bought a C63 AMG - what a monster car!).
Then Tyrone is still with 42 Commando. Doing well on his 3rd tour in Afgan.

For the record, I know of no Royal Marines officers called Russ killed in Afghanistan.

Is it Hunter Troupe or Hunter Troop?

A Royal Marines officer working as a PTI for the Army?? Doing what you say??

26 is also not old for a Royal Marines officer in training. Thats about an average age I'd say. They normally suggest over 20's for training as the time 'outside' gives much needed life experience. Even normal Nod training consists mainly of over 18s (actually many more in their 20s) due to the more mature nature of the training. The really young guys often cannot hack the punishment and many leave only to go back after a couple of years of 'growing'.

Its not that you've said you were a RM Officer in training that bothers me, many people say they did this that or the other to inflate their image (which going by your FB page, website etc you seem to love). Hell, I've even seen people with RM and Para tatoos who've never even set foot in a military establishment, let alone do something so involving as becoming a member of an elite regiment or service. Its the claiming to know and have worked with people who died in the job that gets me..... and the weak background story about the others. The good thing is that there aren't that many RM officers on the list of Afghan casualties so its easy to find out if the person is genuine or not.

Any come backs or proof of the claims made? If you are genuine I'll eat my hat and apologise. But.......

Oh, and as its an Aston forum i suppose i should contribute to that effect: My dad may buy an AMV8 once his XF goes back to Jag next spring.

wow just read back these posts. blimey mate you got some beef!

There is no RM officer called Russ who was killed in Afghan. He was not an officer. Andrew Fisher and Tyrone Willis both with 42 commando, both not officers.
Andrew Fisher was caught in the blast of an IED which killed Russ. His attempt at rehab was unsuccessful and he did not return to RM. He now serves as an acting Sergeant doing PTI for Royal Anglians.
It was 1997/8 when I went in for training mate. I have no idea how/when it's all changed.
And your opinions on my decisions to go sport instead of RM, i couldn't give a toss about.
So be clear, I AM NOT AND WAS NOT A RM OFFICER OR IN ANY ARMED FORCES.

Key points:
You did write that you were an officer in your first post. Now we know you weren't. Typo or hype? Either way, it was a key error in your post. Hence the aggro above.

RM training was always 30 weeks, with an additional 4 or 5 weeks of leave depending on what time of year you started. Never known anyone being called back and told they can do last 4 weeks only. Unless they are recently retired from full timecand past the 3 year retirement marker when recalled.
Ty Willis is a good mate of mine. He even came to my wedding. Don't know the other guy. Ty is not at 42 as far as I know and only did 1 Afghanistan tour. Dates of joining would work out right though, he was a year or so ahead of me.
Never said anything about your sporting career. I have no leverage to say anything about it.

Just spoken to Ty.

Did you actually do training? You went to school with him it seems but he is adamant that you never joined the Corps.

Ok Steve.

You went to school with Ty and Andy.

Ty joined the corps in 97.

Andy joined 16 weeks later but got discharged late in training due to a knee injury. No IED injury to be seen.

Andy joined Green Jackets and is now in the Rifles.

You only ever applied to be an officer but never made it past first hurdle.

So who is this Russ guy who was killed? In that IED blast?
