I think the cash would have to be deposited somewhere. Can you imaging hiding it in your house only to come home some day and find there's been a fire or the place was robbed and emptied?
Easy come easy go hehe

Looks like nowadays you have around 10 years between issues (this may increase with polymer notes as they last longer)

Used to be around 20 years.

How much can YOU spend in ten years? biggrin

You don't have to spend it per se... you just need to launder it into clean cash. Easier still if you have relatives that can help.

You could clean £100k a year without issue or raising (material) alerts.

Probably alot of it, would have to be piecemeal things though, if you're not going to bother laundering it.

I wouldn't be somehow attempting to buy a £250k house or £75k car with a gymbag full of £20 notes.

I'd probably st myself for the whole time I had it...Stressed about having cash I can't properly spend. Knowing that anyone who's lost £1m is probably going to want it back and that alone would keep me very nervous 24/7.
Going from a regular 9-5 Joe public to a now snide operator washing money doesn't sit well.

I think all that money would be a horrible burden.

I'd reluctantly hand it in...I'd kick myself till the day I die but in the long run I know i'd be a lot happier without the stress of £1m of dirty money.

Simple, I would hand it in, then once it goes unclaimed I get it back and don't have to worry about anything as I can pay it in like normal.

It certainly won't be claimed.....I very much doubt you'd ever see an penny but in the interest of this thread you do. Do you have enough faith in the police that your name wouldn't be leaked for a fee to the very people that lost it? Doubtful but possible.

I can't see any good coming from £1m of what is most likely very dodgy money however clean it ends up.

Quite a few here have hit on the best idea. Create a business that depends on mostly cash input, and doesn't have stock to be accounted for. Then each day, bank the days 'takings', random plausible amounts, and when you've absorbed the £1m, shut it down.

As mentioned earlier, any trace of anything suspect about the money and they’ll class it as proceeds of crime without any substantial evidence, and you’ll never see it again. That type of monetary find is never going to be close to legal.

What would be the best outcome for laundering the money?
£1,000,000 pushed through a couple of companies
£10k on expenses to make the companies seem legit?
20% CT?

What else?

I would probably spend quite a bit of time buying assets and doing it that way. Watches/precious metals/ rare items etc.

The problem is you can only spend circa £4k or so in 'cash' else it gets flagged up, same if you dump it into a bank account etc, after reading the entire thread, it looks like it's nigh impossible for the average Joe to do much more than have a bit of extra ready cash else suspicion falls very fast.

Buy land legitimately with mortgage etc and build a house/ houses. I can say from very current experience that it’s a mahoosive money pit and that builders/ tradesmen LOVE cash. hehe

Rinse and repeat until the money is gone and sell the final house.

I was going to suggest buying a flat or house that needs some work. Legitimately with a mortgage. Pay some of the works legit and then pay a fair few of the tradies in cash. You can spank fantastic amounts that way

My late Grandfather had a similar problem back in the late 50's early 60's He worked abroad for the latter part of his life and would try to find out what products the locals had trouble buying locally and 'import' it to sell for a bit of extra beer money, Levi jeans behind the iron curtain was a nice little earner...

He was on a four year contract to Ceylon as it was back then and discovered that the local men couldn't get decent razor blades for love nor money so he started taking out boxes of Wilkinson Swords razor blades and selling them at a profit for beer money.

Fast forward to the end of his contract and his 'beer money' had become a pile of cash that he had no hope of converting to Sterling due to currency controls. Iirc it was his (very clean shaven) site foreman that suggested he buy some gemstones...

So his huge pile of cash became a small handful of saphires and moonstones which were simply walked through customs at Heathrow.

The just risk it on the ferry to Switzerland idea is another good one..
Why has nobody noticed this ?
You may not mean this, but my first thought was that’s going to have be one narrow ferry, there may be alternatives, but the only way I’m aware of getting to Switzerland by water, is to enter the Rijn near Rotterdam, and follow it across Europe, it changes to the Rhine, and enters Switzerland at the canton of Graubünden.
