I was looking for things to buy my niece for christmas and started looking at Marble Runs as I always thought they were brilliant when i was little. Then on youtube I found this ridiculous Marble World so I now have something to aim for:

But they're not identical-sounding engines currently (although moving more that way admittedly). Electric motors all DO sound the same, there's nothing unique about them compared with petrol engines over the last 50+ years.
That sound is an unwanted and unplanned side effect of the ICE. If it had been possible to engineer it out in the early days of ICE development, you'd never have missed it. Those of us who like ICE+induction+exhaust noise are dinosaurs. Just like those who lamented the loss of the sounds and smells of horse-drawn vehicles.
It's progress. Meanwhile, the same progress has made it possible to enjoy any engine sound you want in the cabin (OBDII dongle + bluetooth stereo/phone).
