A bit of Googling will give you a proper explanation....

As far as I understand.

-There is a fintie amount of bitcoins.
-Your PC has to solve a puzzle/task to 'unlock' a bit coin
-This requires computing power
-As more and more coins are unlocked, the puzzle to release more becomes exponentially more difficult
-Like the chap in the video said, their profit is directly affected by whatever the current ratio is
-Solo mining with desktop hardware is all but pointless. I think I read it was something like 98 years to mine one coin!
A simple analogy is that it is similar to finding all the prime numbers up to a certain upper limit. If you find it first it is registered as yours.

So who is setting these puzzles and controlling the creation of the bitcoins?

Indeed.

I might create my own currency 'stcoins' and make myself incredibly wealthy as soon as everyone else joins up.

If you want the complete guide on it including some PHers trying it out, there is a thread here:

When you get it that clean surely you wouldn't even want to drive it?

That's a very clean example of someone who's gone out and bought every single conceivable extra from an accessories catalogue, and made the end result look like a dog's dinner.

When people ask me how to mine bitcoins at home, I'm going to send them that link and tell them not to bother...

That's just insane - £1.5m/mo from that operation!
Yup, not exactly worth setting your home PC to task is it hehe

$80k per month electric bill (per site)!
when it all started you could do it at home, but it's an arms race. It's basically that level now otherwise not worth bothering.

I bet they had a few they cut out though.

Seller: "This gun was shot by a 4yo and killed him Mom"
Buyer: "F'ing A! I'm so totally having that one. How much? And do you have any used in like a high school massacre? 'cos I'd love one of those."
