Ali, first and foremost, my sympathy for your loss.

Whatever you do I hope it goes well and raises a ton of cash for a very worthy cause.

Given what you've said about the channel could you not do the same distance, but in a local pool? I'd expect the local rag/news would pick up even more for something they could get to easily?

I have an idea: A Wig A Day, for 30 days. The badder, the better.

Phase 1 - advertise online for as many wigs as you can possibly get.

Phase 2 - wear a different one each day for charity. Employers / Clients should be okay with this (though check first) as it makes for a talking point.

Very campaignable, and bloggable.

I don't know why people feel like they have to get something in return for giving to charity. I just donate to charity whenever, I don't need to feel like I'm getting my money's worth by having somebody sit in a bath full of beans.

I voted for swimming across the Tay, but please make sure it's slack water otherwise you'll end up in Denmark as the tide is wicked.

So many people do sporting challenges for charity that it gets a bit boring, I'd be more inclined to donate to a woman with long hair who was intending to shave it off.

You could always combine two, shave the hair and then go swimming, saves you wearing a cap!

And then wear a different wig a day for the month after!

Do a tough mudder or tough guy event. Both involve a bit of swimming.

What were your mums* passions?

The sport thing has been over done imho. You could do something like clean a litter covered area up up, for example.

  • bugger only knows what I'm supposed to do with the apostrophe there.

Because everyone gets bored (well, I know I do!) of being asked to sponsor Tom, Dick & Harry, their Uncle & his dog, I want to do something that isn’t done as the norm.
So instead of doing something pointless (swimming, cycling, running etc.) as many others do, and as you say, everyone is fed up of chugging, how about doing something useful such as what one of my neighbours did when running the London marathon.

He offered to wash cars for £5 each. This was so popular that all the street wanted them doing and many gave him a tenner.

He didn't get chance to do ours but even a tightwad like me donated £10 and so did my other half mainly because of the fact that he wasn't just holding his hand out.

Everyone knows what a big deal this is for a girl so it should get a good amount of money.
