What does swimming a marathon entail? surely not 24 miles?
26 miles & 385 yards

= 42,000 metres

= 1,680 lengths of a 25m pool

I would encourage you to think outside the box a little, and organise an event that people will enjoy in aid of the Charity. Id be far more giving in that sort of environment.

Ideas off the cuff, a Car Fest, a beach based swimathom (in the summer) with entertainment etc, a giant murder mystery etc.... Anything in particular that your mum liked?

Best of luck in whatever you do decide...
My FB is full of people organising Car Meets for Charity laugh

However, as I replied earlier in the thread to someone else - I simply don't have time to organise so,etching frown

Thus this is me wanting to make a sacrifice & fund raise. It costs just over £7k to run the Hospice for a day & that's my goal; it may take me a couple of years, but so be it! I already donate a little time, but with working away from home all week, my Father with Alzheimer's that we are trying to keep in the family home so we help care for him, and my FiL also has Alzheimer's so we try to spend one weekend with them a month - time is scarce for myself & my partner to find time to do the housework, let alone have time to go out for dinner, or the pub, or stuff you take for granted that you do with yours frown

Hence a swim is easier for me - I can train whilst away in a hotel all week.

Having my head shaved is even easier, although much more dramatic & traumatic!

Obviously I wont read 5 pages of other people's opinions so this may have been said, but if you can swim that far why not swim the channel? THat would be a huge achievement and something you can tell your grandkids (or anyone who will listen of course)
Swimming a marathon is quite an achievement but "I swam loads of lengths of a pool" versus "I swam the channel" is a no brainer.
I'd offer to join you but about 50 metres is my stamina limit.
Because that takes years of training & you still aren't guaranteed to do it due to weather & currents smile

And because ATM that's my stamina too wink

My wife shaved her head for charity last year. Made over £1500 with very little effort. I'm sure you could make much more if you tap in to the PH community. Why not do it at the Pie&Piston event? Hold an auction, the prize being the winner does the shaving!

ETA, the wife looked great with a skin head.
Oh, if I can tap you all up - I will!! But I have to ask permission & sort what I'm doing first!

BTaP has it's own charity it supports, besides its in April this year & I'm not going weeping

Plus I want to be able to sell the hair/have a scalp left wink

I meant 26 miles, but in the pool - the 10m for a marathon tends to be open water from what I've read.

I managed 20 lengths last night & every bit of me hurts today - I've not swam for decades (holiday pools don't count!)

Pool swimming comes with it's own dangers - one of the guys that attempted this in the US says he lost all his hair due toto much immersion in chlorine!

yikes

My wife swam / swum? a mile of the Thames last year for charity.
It was an organised event, which is done every year.
She had to have a range of injections for various diseases, she also had to wear a wet suit and hat.
She was not allowed to do it unless she complied with these rules.
I would have a word with your doctor, if you plan on swimming the Tay
thumbup yes, we're investigating all of that at the moment

Looks more & more likely that I'm going to loose my hair!

Thank you for all your help, the decision is made, it will be a head shave after my hair is cut off, on the anniversary of Mum's death in November.

Unfortunately my swimming coach doesn't think I'll be able to regain my levels of fitness to attempt any major challenge in suitable weather this year - which is a shame, but my own fault & gives me a goal for next year biggrin

My JustGiving page (linked on the OP) has been updated & I'm at 10% of my target already thumbup

Pledges to colour my shaved head will be accepted & carried out smile

Yes - BUT it will have to be a short mohican after the shave & some of it has grown back.

As I've already been sponsored £100's to shave it all off biggrin

Ok, how about if I have the Mohican without the sides being shaved?

Eg this, in pink?

I can't shave the sides as I want to donate the hair for wigs, but it can be dyed I think
