Probably less of a mark up than a man with a clipboard. wink

To be fair, my gross profit is about 70% but net is less than 10%.

I swapped to contacts around 10 years ago and never looked back. Wouldnt ever go back to prescription sunglasses for the hassle.
Couldn't agree more.

I have worn soft daily disposable contacts for about 10 years as well and IMO they are the very next best thing to having properly working eyes.

I can wear any sunglasses I like!

Why not just buy a pair of varifocals with Reactolite lenses - job jobbed in one!
Because most people don't want to look like a rapist / peado.
biggrin

That made me laugh as it's exactly what my dad says... "Those people that wear those tinted glasses always look really creepy to me".

I know it's wrong, but I tend to agree with my dad. I just think people with tinted spectacles look VERY seedy!

Rayban don't have a genuine rx lens option. David Clulow (being the retail arm of the co that manufacture Rayban) did have a small range with prescription and the Rayban logo, Rayban Rox iirc but I don't know if they are still available.
Oakley, Serengeti, MJ, Bolle all do their own, proper, lenses with prescription, single vision and varifocal.

I use Adidas Evil Eye sunnies. They have plain lenses and an optical clip in bit so you can have different tints for much lower cost. Got them from vision3k on the net.

Don't know if it is the same in the UK but in Germany in the last two years the price of specs and frames has dropped dramatically. I used to go to a handmade spec frame company in Covent Garden because they could supply exactly what I wanted at only £250-£300 for the frames. I can now buy almost identical items here for 100 Euros or even less.

Don't forget that if you do need to wear prescription glasses for driving you need 2x pairs, in case one pair are lost or damaged. Think it's the law in Germany and some other countries. Common sense, anyway.

Secondly, does no-one use clip-ons ? Cheap, simple, interchangeable. Or is style everything ?

Can't remember if mine are Reactolites or Transitions, but they don't work properly unless driving top down - I think the UV is absorbed by the window glass. Just got my revised prescription today, so also looking for decent prescription sunglasses!

I've recently been told my eyes are ste so I got a pair of Boots own Oakley style (ish! ) prescription sunglasses free with my first set of specs.
I was only this morning looking at Wayfarers with prescription dark lenses but am not sure they won't look odd.

I swapped from prescription, photochromic glasses because they were useless when driving and changed to prescription sunglasses. I now have prescription polarising sunglasses which I find great for driving although some of the small lcd displays become unreadable.

My eyesight has deteriorated in the last few years due to astigmatism and I put my Maui Jims away and got a 'normal' pair of glasses plus a heavily tinted pair of 'sun' glasses from Specsavers.
My wife just paid to have my MJs sent to the factory to have prescription lenses put in.
What a difference. I feel like my window to the world has just been cleaned and polished and I can see again. It's a revelation.

I loved my MJs so much when I bought them that I got a second pair. Despite the £240 cost to convert them I am thinking about sending my second pair away to be done too.

Maui Jim Ka'anapali rose tinted. Bloody fantastic.

I've ordered glasses off the internet. They were particularly concerned about my PD, because of my prescription and rang me, arranging for me to send an old pair of glasses to them.

Saved quite a bit, until I left them on my car roof.... Ordering a further pair was at least easy.

Back to the drawing board for me - tried a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers on last night and despite really want to like them, they made me look like a complete Belmer - didn't suit me at all.

I think I might just get a pair of my old Oakleys re-lensed instead as I know I like those ones.

I had a pair of Serengeti's made up last year, by the factory using their own lenses. They took an extra couple of weeks to arrive, but well worth it & about £400 all in.
For me, i'm buying the glasses partly for the style & partly because of the lens quality, so it seems mental to have to pay for & then throw away the supplied lenses & replace with a substandard set of perscription lenses. They are never the same & i've had a few sets of rayban, oakley etc done over the years.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but it's got me thinking as I wear prescription sunnies. Is my prescription for glasses, the same as for contact lenses? I've seen a decent price online for daily disposable contacts.

I have a copy of my full prescription, and really can't be bothered to go to an optician for contact lens fit up.

No, you need a separate contact lens check, they need some additional info like the shape of your eye to make sure you get ones that fit properly.

With the various deals offered by my eye care bods, a new pair of square wires with prescription iridium lenses worked out at $224.

Duly ordered and waiting for Messrs Oakley to snap to and churn them out.
