Interesting stuff, thanks. I never knew about the angle and the pre-tension must take a hefty hoik!

A Dutch train says "kedeng kedeng".

In the old days, trains went clickety-click clickety-click clickety-click because they were going over the expansion gaps.

Now (and for quite a lot of years) the rails are continuously welded so they don't go clickety-click.

They do have expansion joints but they are a long way apart and rather than being a gap the ends are cut at an angle so they slide past each other as they expand/contract. Also, they nail one end of a section down and pull hard on the other end to put a bit of pre stretch in so that when they heat up they don't buckle.

For a Mercedes that looks very low rent.
Have you seen the tablet thing stuck to the dash, modern German car styling is just so cheap, chavy and ...I've run out of words..confused
That's an SLK and I've got one - you can't actually spot that from in the car. Until I saw that pic I'd never even noticed it (and I'm on my second after 3 years!).
we've just got one and you are correct; weirdly it's not really too noticeable in day to day usage
