Shut the door but don't mess with the extractor isolator switch. smile
I don't get it, both notices say you must shut the door?
It's ambiguous - it could be interpreted as "do not isolate the extractor fan as well as shutting the door" - meaning it's OK to isolate the extractor fan as long as you leave the door open, or vice versa

Probably should be a command between FAN & AND, to make it clearer

A little ambiguous maybe, but anyone with a modicum of common sense should be able to work that one out. Fan on, door closed.

Of course, however I don't think this thread is for people with a modicum of common sense; it's for people who get irrationally irritated at minor misalignments wink

What, like "Please don't isolate the fan PRESENT ARMS and keep the door shut". Doesn't make it clearer, IMO.

No? confused They really don't
Yes, they really do.

First notice notice says "Don't isolate the fan and shut the door when taking a shower" Meaning don't isolate the fan. Shut the door.

You have to have extremely poor grammar to write a note like that to mean dont shut the door.

If it wanted to say don't shut the door, the wording would have been "Don't isolate the fan OR shut the door when taking a shower."

I don't think you quite have an understanding of English grammar. The correct, unambiguous sentence construction would be either:

"Please keep the door shut and do not isolate the extractor fan ..."

or

"Please do not isolate the extractor fan and do keep the door shut ..."

The original sentence does not adequately terminate the negative verb before the affirmative verb which creates the ambiguity. Hence the joke.

I don't think he's ever seen 2 sets of lawyers going to town on the correct construction of sentences - cases where hideous amounts of money can turn on whether there should have been a comma in a certain place, or whether "and" is conjunctive or disjunctive...

I never claimed the notice was grammatically perfect, however you'd have to be a prize moron to think is says you need to leave the door open.

Ah, sorry, didn't realise you were taking this that seriously. Yes, you are right, that would take a prize moron.

Hey chaps, this is a thread about things that irritate a sense of need for perfection, not the grammar Nazi thread. Allow those who are offended by sloppy English to be offended, please!

By Jingo Old Boy, you're right! What's more, on the blue sign the word occupants should be either occupant's or occupants' as it is a possessive! The offending matter in hand is actually water vapour, not steam. Let's go to town on the pedantry!

Low black 'fence' at the forefront has been in place for years.

Harmless, relatively pointless however it doesn't annoy or bother anyone.

On the other hand...

The higher fence put up this week by neighbour which, apparently, 'protects his property & ensures that he retains his land'.

Not sure what he means by that.

Boils my piss every time I look at it.
