Have you noticed that 'Departures' is always upstairs in airports (at least, airports with more than one level)? It's cheating really, if you think about it.

They ought to give discount on the tickets since you're doing the first bit of the climb for them...

The circumference of the earth is roughly 40,075km

it rotates 360 every 24 hours (or so)

40,075/24 = 1,669km/hr

That's about 1,000 mph.

Know as the coriolis effect, clouds and weather patterns are all effected by the spin of the earth.

How about on top of your Tesla Teleforce charged particle beam projector?

I can't figure it out, maybe we are spinning, but sounds like (as they do with most things) they've over exaggerated the speed,
The earth has a circumference of approxiamtely 40,000 km.

Any single point on the equator makes one whole rotation in 24 hours (it's called a "day").

In one hour that point will have travelled 1/24 of 40,000 km i.e. 1,667 km in one hour.

That wasn't hard.

Found it!

Just had to fire up the infinite improbability drive to take me to it in the end. Easy really.

I think you'll find this explains why aeroplanes take off.
I thought it was the escalators in airports. I'll never get this Science! !
Nah, the escalators are stationary, it's the airport that's moving.

I call bullst on your post!

You can argue anything with facts but if my car is stationary and what you said is true - then why isn't my speedo at 1000mph?

I just destroyed your post - eat that st!

I had a car like that once. Turned out the speedo cable had snapped.

Saw something the other day that some scientist recon the Earth is spinning at 1675KM/h. Now I don't know about you, but I think I'd notice if I was doing that sort of speed, but as usual the news is willing to report the "findings" of these fruitcakes.
Well you aren't actually travelling at that speed, unless you are on the equator. The closer to the poles you get the slower you are travelling around the axis of the earth's rotation until you are just spinning around on the spot.

Of course what will really blow your mind is how fast we are travelling around the sun, and then through the galaxy, universe etc...

We're trying to discuss serious scientific theory here. Kindly take your religious fairy tales off to the creationism thread.

Which means your average 1970's car has travelled further than the Voyager space probes

It is spinning, but not as fast as it used to, in the good old days you know when you could call a spade a spade and there was non of this PC malarky, back in the Edicarin days when a day was only 21hours we didn't have time to fit all that bullst in.

That's why the dinosaurs died out - don't you know. They died from stress because they couldn't fit all their work into a 22 hour day.

I fear that I may blow the OP's mind, but I have to point out that it's all relative.

What I have difficulty with is the big bang happening at all points in space-time in the same instant.

Must have been impressive to see (I know).

On a broadly unrelated note, I've always liked the idea of being able to walk 'stationary in space' (notwithstanding the earth's orbit round the sun) - the very opposite of geostationery.

If I assume I can walk at 4mph, then I could cover 96 miles in a 24 hour period (if I was up to it), so round about 15 miles from either the north or south pole (where the diameter would be 96 miles or so) you could walk round 'stationary' in space while the earth revolves beneath you...constantly at the same time of day with just the dates changing each time you passed the date-line.
