Being in the water around a big ship that's in port, inbetween the ship and dockside.

How the diver guys swim around under those ships checking props and other such things makes me shiver.

No idea why I'm such a wuss.
Absolutely this. No idea why but i shudder at the thought of swimming up to the side of a container ship moored (in this case at Felixstowe Port). I used to live near there and take my lad down to watch the boats but what you describe above is spot on. More than a few years ago two container ships collided but did not sink. One of them was moored and the whole front of it had split open and had to be repaired. I could see the guys welding it back together whilst the sea water was still in the front of it. Freaked me out just imaginging being in that spot.

Well, there's absolutely no way you'd ever get me into those waters so there'd be nothing to enjoy anyway!

I have a massive fear on behalf of my young son...

This worry also transfers to other peoples kids, I see danger everywhere for them and seem to think their parents don't! (ie toddlers walking ahead or behind their parents next to a busy road)
This, exactly this.

Can't stop worrying about mine (like some psychological curse I can't rid myself of) and seeing others in situations of near danger, not properly supervised, bothers me a lot. I hate how people drive quickly past pavements with young children walking, running or worse cycling/scootering on them, or approaching zebra crossings and the like, as if they never run out, lose balance or whatever. I must be the only muppet who pulls wide past kids if there's room, and always slow down.

Idiots driving past schools at 40mph at opening/closing time, skirting past and weaving in and out of the parked cars and wandering hordes should be culled. And parents who open doors of said cars traffic side on and get the kids out that way rather than the pavement side, well...

I've seen a few near misses of feral kids as young as 8 or 9 cycling, even in the dark, into and across busy traffic, and approached a pelican crossing in Boston last autumn as a large family walked to the central island - still green for traffic my way - and the lead child, around 2 or 3 got there ahead of the mother (who should have been holding his hand) got there and stepped straight out in front of me. Terrifying.

Other than that, monsters people. People and heights.

I agree with that.

I also used to be terrified of stairs with gaps in them, although thankfully I got over that a few years ago.
Must have been an important step for you.

On a more serious note, injections. Absolutely terrified of them and have been as long as I can remember - I think it's the thought of the pointy needle piercing my skin that really freaks me out (and blood - in the case of blood tests).

Another one was broken/ smashed glass for the reasons above. Luckily it's not such an issue now, I've jsut grown out of it tongue out

With you on the man-made water thing. Awful to hear of your loss, too.
Much appreciated; was in 2007 so a long time ago; we do have the odd down moment but generally over it. It does make me worry about the kids probably more than most.

To the huntsman spider fearer; we camped in Oz (a very bad idea) and had a huge one crawl into our tent. I was a gibbering wreck for much of the rest of the stay and we ditched our tent pronto!

Lifts and being buried alive aside, this is my biggest fear too. Gets worse the better I do at work as well, as there's more to lose. It never used to be a problem, I'd live like I'd never be without work but now I find I'm increasingly desperate to pay off the mortgage and get some more savings behind me.

Good luck with the interview! thumbup

Wasps.

Absolutely petrified of them. Probably stems from last being stung when I was 3 years old and I know my time's long overdue to be stung again.
+1
The one thing that truly scares the life out of me, stupid I know, but can't control the fear if 1 appears near me.
if 1 gets in the lorry when I'm driving, I have to stop immediately and get out.
What about these?

Presumably you jumped outside then set the tent on fire? That's probably what I'd have done. I don't have a big problem with regular sized spiders, but they have no right being that size!
We took it down two days later armed with weapons grade insect spray. Saw loads more spiders but none as big.

Actually just thought of a few more fears of mine thanks to the thread! frown

1. Lifts - Particularly getting stuck in them. Didn't help that in one day of work I managed to get stuck in one 5 times hehe

2. Mice/ rodents. Freaky little creatures.

3. Death and near death. Not for myself as such weirdly, but for my family/ loved ones.

Also for me the Dentist, I literally am shaking before I go in, had a bad experience once as the anesthetic takes ages to work! Also hate heights/edges, could never do a bungee jump!

The main probelm is the sheer speed of them isn't it. Well that and the fact they can jump hehe

We lived pretty much exclusively in a tent for about a year in Oz and had many spider encounters but we made sure the tent was zipped up at all times so had very few creatures get inside. The whole experience certainly helped with my wife's fear of creepy crawlies though, so worth it. biggrin

Mind you, I think the biggest one we saw was when staying with relatives inside a house.

I was ordered to remove this one before we went to bed. Having got a bit too used to the timid natured ones in the bush I thought a tap up the arse with a pencil would see it scarper off but this cocky urbaner actually attacked the pencil, which scared the crap out of me and caused me to throw the spider (still attached to the pencil) across the room. After about an hour of failed tactics I eventually managed to get it into a cereal box. Didn't really enjoy doing that as by that time it was on the roof so I had to stand directly under it. eek

I managed to get him safely outside, and then got told me off by my Aunt; she was letting it live inside to control insects rolleyesbanghead

1. Cancer. More specifically developing a cancer. Rationally there's a good chance of it happening, but I worry about that. Probably because of my job (GP) and seeing folk with it day in day out.

2. Not being able to breathe whether due to water (drowning), or smoke/fire. Again partly moulded by life experiences.

You realise the Huntsman is one spider that you don't actually have to worry about in Australia, don't you? A Funnel Web, Redback or White Tip is a different matter.

I'm either alone in this fear or nobody has thought of it yet but SPACE freaks me out.

Heard a statement I think sums it up nicely though:

“There are two possibilities in life:
1. We are alone in this universe
2. Or we are not.
Either option is terrifying! “

I found myself bringing on panic attacks thinking about space and its size, the possibilities out there for life or no life, does it end? Are we just bacteria in a bigger picture?

People moan about walking a mile, a walk that takes minutes yet for some this is too far for them. We can drive on average 70mph and get from Glasgow to London in ~6hours, fly to the other side of our planet in 24 hours at ~500mph yet at 17,000mph it takes NINE MONTHS to get to our closest planet!

I’m sweating typing this and have found myself shivering when I look out to the sky at night when its clear and dry!

My fear I think is because I know so little about it all.
