Night dives, they scare me silly, my imagination runs wild thinking about creatures that can do me harm and I don't know if they are 50ft or 1ft away from me just itching to munch on a limb. However I quite enjoy the feeling and facing up to my fears so have booked 3 night dives on my next trip to Dahab.

I never understood fear of spiders in this country, until i threw the leafy top bit of a tomato at a mate, he screamed and chased me for over two hours armed with a lump hammer fully intent on doing me mischief.

Almost came a cropper swimming once too - was snorkelling a reef that came to within a few inches of the surface at most points except for a deeper channel, swam out through the channel and snorkelled happily, tried to get back and nope, was heading backwards out to sea at a rate of knots as the waves surged over the reef and the water rushed seawards out through my channel, current ripped my mask and one flipper off, ended up having to pull myself hand over hand over the reef getting cut to buggery. Frightening how quickly you exhaust yourself when panic sets in and you try and fight a current.
Same with rip tides. never try to swim against a rip tide - you'll quickly tire out. Better to swim with it until it abates or if you can swim at right angles to it. Swim against it and you'll still get swept out but you will be Knackered within minutes.

1000% this.

Terrifying thought and yes I know one day I'll have to face it.

It doesn't matter how old they are, how ill they are, how 'expected' it is, you're never ready to lose your parents. frown

However, there's an up-side.

Two less Christmas presents to buy.

Dont ask me why, but I used to be really afraid of gas masks. they were just so incredibly creepy and scary looking. This was most definitely not helped by the "empty child" episode of Dr Who....

Anyway, thats all behind me now. The only thing that really scares me now is dying in a slow but painful manner with plenty of time to panic uselessly - such examples include drowning, burning to death, being mauled by a vicious animal or being crushed.
When I check out, I'd like to do it quickly and with minimal pain!

Driving along a very steep downhill narrow muddy slippery mountain road with a sheer drop, when you turn the wheel but the car carries straight on, and you brake and nothing happens. That is a bit puckering.

In about 2000 I had a friend who had a nearly new diesel Range Rover. As we approached such an incline, he moved the gear lever into low range. It started beeping to show that it was making the change and he just said "fk this" and moved the lever back into drive. On the muddy slope which was about wide enough for 1.4 Range Rovers the rear end started to try to overtake the back end so he hit the accelerator hard. At the bottom he had to steer hard right to avoid a pond.

The car slid sideways and we ended up in about 3 feet of water. I was shaking and he just calmly forced the door open and proclaimed "fk me, we made it!". I climbed through his door in shock and we just stared at the stricken car with our shotguns in the boot.

He's sadly gone now (nothing to do with driving). I miss him. His death was my greatest fear.

Used to have a real problem with spiders, but many nights in the rainforest sharing space the the biggest, hairiest, longest fanged spiders in the world seems to have cured me.

Death I can handle, we're all worm food one way or the other, it's that last click on the rebound damping that keeps me awake at nights.

I can get 5k miles from a front tyre, 2.5-3k from a rear but that 'click' varies depending on tyre wear, do I try to get smart by adding/removing that click to match tyre wear or do I just say fk it and hope it corners ok?
Do you buy supersoft tyres, or drive hard everywhere? I don't even know what the "clicks" are you're talking about smile
Bike tyres, they're all soft just how soft.

Rebound damping controls how the suspension extends from being compressed by either a bump or braking. Due to my bike being 200kg with me at 120kg my body position has a massive effect on how the bike behaves so a 'click' here or there (which controls oil flow in the forks and thus the behaviour of the wheel) can have a big effect.

Didn't the words "Butterfly House" give you a clue as to the contents therein??
I'm glad I'm not alone in that one then! My fear is nowhere near as bad as it used to be when I was a kid, but they make me uncomfortable still.

I put it down to my first visit to a butterfly house as a kid - no sooner had I walked in when a giant African butterfly swooped into my face. It scared the crap out of me and I ran out, and ever since I would run away from them or windmill about trying to scare them off.

Moths unsettle me too.
