But Michael Carroll had more fun in a week than I've had in my whole life.
hehe

I'd love to read about it, from his point of view. I bet he had some right leaches around him. To burn £10m in 5 years or whatever it was, and have nothing to show for it bar memories, that's some effort.

Brewsters Millions?
Thick as two short planks, and systematically taken advantage of by his friends. But on one level, what the hell, his awful friends deserved the money just as much as he did, which is to say, not at all. Just like any lottery winner.

I actually think winning big would not be a good thing for me (or perhaps many people). I'd learn lots of unpleasant things about people, I suspect, and probably some unpleasant things about myself as well.
At least you'd get to cry about it sitting in your Aventador or on your private island though.

Shall see what my 5 free lucky dips get me tonight, I suspect fk all, I'll play again in 10 weeks time when it inevitably reaches 50 million again.

So

I don't believe anyone that's declared winning has been kidnapped and ransomed so far.
There have been a few violent robberies. They seem to be kept pretty quiet though.

There was a lot of concern when the lottery started - when the Australian lottery started the 5yr old son of one of the early winners was kidnapped and murdered.

Slightly off topic. For the second time in my life, I found a week old lottery ticket last night whilst walking the dog. It was in a quiet area where I live, on the edge of a large green, so not out side a house or shop for example. Naturally, I went home and checked it. Nowt. So the conundrum. If it was a winner, what next? Depends on the amount I guess. A few quid, pop into the local store and cash it? But a big win ? Well, for a start, I’d not know where it was purchased from, so that’s a hiccup. And the buyer might do a lucky number regularly, and thus Camelot would be able to verify his buying history, and verify when and where he bought it. So does one just ring Camelot, and report the found ticket? Comments Guys ?

PS Camelot website instructs finders of lost tickets to forward it to them. Doesn't say what happens to the winnings if it is unclaimed though.

More googling finds this:-

"If no corresponding prize claim or lost ticket notice has been received the prize may be paid to the finder at Camelot's discretion after the expiry of the 180-day claim deadline"

I never realised that the government takes 40% from the powerball winnings, plus any state taxes. Ouchers!

There's quite a famous case where the ticket was worth £15K and a court only ordered half of it to be paid back. The finders were adamant it was "finders keepers".

See the daugthers ex-boyfriend is the latest focus of an article for the Daily Mail, wondering who it will be next, really scraping the bottom of barrel to give this story some legs.

Going public, madness.

That would be my main argument. I dont really care if mates and family know, I just don't want the tabloids sniffing around in our lives ....or going ape st when I drop a couple of million on cars.

This, couldn't give a fk is Fred down the pub thinks I'm an ahole because I haven't bought him an Aston Martin, or Aunty Joan thinks I'm ungrateful because I haven't paid off her mate's mortgage, I can acknowledge that unless you disapear off the face of the earth and don't contact anyone you currently know you can't avoid family and people you know working out your finanical situation has changed significantly, but you can avoid the media circus if you're smart.

Is someone at the National Lottery smoking something? They expect to see similar volumes of website traffic for £7m as they do for a £66m must-be-won jackpot?

Right you are....feels a little optimistic to me!

Dear Pork,

You may have experienced problems trying to use our website over the weekend, this was due to unprecedented demand for tickets for Saturday's Lotto draw.

Please be advised that we expect to see similar volumes of visitors to The National Lottery website in the hours leading up to the close of ticket sales for the Lotto draw at 7.30pm this Saturday 16th January.

If you plan to buy a ticket for any of our draw based games this week and you need to add funds to your account to play, we would recommend that you do this as early as possible in order to avoid disappointment.

Sincerely,

The National Lottery Team

Very optimistic I think

I think Saturday was the last go for many people on what they see to now be a broken system which is way overpriced. Was for me anyway.

There will be another rush for big jackpots but I think the normal draws will drop in numbers.

That big draw has highlighted to the masses how difficult it is to win....news channels were running constantly saying how impossible it was to win, I wonder if that will have a negative affect.

Five, I think.

And without to be big spuds. I think £66m has a much greater alure than £1m and wouldn't expect 5 x £1m prizes to cause the frenzy (Maria and ticket buying) that last weeks draw cause.

I'm with the guy above, I'm out of Lotto now. I will but a ticket when it reaches £50m again but considering I can't remember the last time I had anything other than a worthless lucky dip, it's lost its appeal to me - they've broken it.
