So I've previously nearly bought an arc welder from Aldi. I don't do any welding, nor do I need to do any welding. Had I bought it, I would have used it to practise welding, a skill which fun, is useless to me at the moment.

They have an incredible amount of stuff that you think you don't need, and the woman in your life knows you don't need, but you decide in a fit of glorious manliness, that you actually really need.

Anyway, as I'm currently single and therefore have no woman to keep me in check, I ended up buying a car polisher from the Germans in question.

Now, I actually need this so it doesn't really count. My car is a bit of a shed and really needed a proper polish, but trying to do it by hand was just ridiculous. The polisher cost 15 pounds and is essentially a rotating buffer. But it does the job! Absolutely chuffed with it, because combined with some decent polish has made a decent difference on my car. So far on the side I've done it has gone from looking like a ropey 15 year old Teutonic barge to looking like a 12 year old German saloon, used. *yes, that is a perfectly good method of describing how old a car looks.

They sell some pretty good beer there, too.

Is the polisher today's Thursday deal? Think I need to get down there later and see if it's gone. smile

Just this morning whilst browsing the shelves of said establishment I spotted

a lovely little thing that I really had no need for but, just had to have it. It really is a lovely looking thing and, I wager if one traipses down to said establishment and finds one left on the shelf, you'll be parted with £5.99 - they really do look nice!

Electric tile cutter, sledge hammer, axe, box of split pins, and a tow rope. I've used the tow rope so far, for pulling tree branches clear.

I hardly dare go into places that sell man junk. I'll be needing a welder for when I never get around to restoring the old car still in the lockup where I left it in 1992. hehe

Compressor with cheap crappy accessories, pillar drill, various hand tools, angle grinder in case, router and bits, router table, big welders hemet, various tools I can't remember and oh yes a very small arc welder with immaculate red paintwork covered in an inch of protective dust, I did test it when I bought it about 6 years ago. The box of rods are kept on the floor of the immersion cupboard and are ready to leap into action when needed.

Bolt Croppers at £8.99. And only because a few days earlier I found a locked padlock on a heavy duty bike chain and had no idea where the key was.

Padlock chopped, job done, new padlock bought, following day I found the original key...

Still, I now have bolt croppers in the shed.

I've found some useful stuff in Aldi & Lidl - stubby spanners, set squares, cheap angle grinders and so on. It all gets used sooner or later - I was doing something the other day and thought "I need a swan neck spanner for this" lo and behold this week lidl had some in. Most of it only costs £5-10, I wouldn't buy anything too expensive there - arc welder isn't really what you want for car bodywork anyway.. maybe they'll do a cheap mig or tig one day !

A bread maker, not manly, and a bedside alarm clock that projects the time onto my bedroom ceiling so I don't have to turn over to see the time. Also, a hospital type lap table for in bed, which fell apart.

A new store was opened near where I work in what used to be a Lidl store, only five minutes away from another Aldi store that's been there for years. People were queued round the block at 8am last Thursday when it opened for the first time.

Saw a cut price Arc welder in our Lidl this weekend. No use for it, but so nearly brought it ("just in case" man logic). I cannot state that i can't weld as i've never attempted it!

Still, a fantastic place for those small kegs of Grafenwalder beer, dodgy South African wines, and a cracking but dubious bottle of Ouzo.

Got the car polisher. Also bought a spirit level which is almost entirely useless as a spirit level. However it does have an integrated tape measure, 2 line markers, steel ruler which has angles under it and some storage for pencils. All of that stuff on it means you can only put it down flat on the bottom edge. It's truly a st spirit level, I love it.

Yes! Brilliant piece of kit! No longer does the mrs. elbow me in the ribs at silly o'clock to ask "what time is it?" - she just looks up at the ceiling smile

I bought the glass lidded tea caddy and use it as a watch box, many do. I sometimes pick up stuff in aldi and wonder what I can use if as. Improvisation is fun.
