Could you explain to this clueless observer how it's worked out? Something to do with Lunar phases, like Lent and Easter?

Quick question for you guys that partake in Ramadan (I am moving to Dubai in 3 weeks, so quite curious on getting to know more)....

A guy I work with is a Muslim, and he lives in Ireland. He was over last week in the office in the UK, and I saw him drinking in the office (water only). I asked him why he was not partaking in Ramadan, and he stated he was, but was allowed to drink because he was "travelling". It sounded like a kop-out to me, but he was adamant that provided he was 40 miles from home he was allowed. He then joined me for a cigarette later on in the day for the same reason!

Is that true? Or was he just "getting away with it"?

If you're travelling then you're exempt. You can compensate for it in a number of ways.

As has been mentioned before, fasting is a purely personal thing so you can't really cheat or kop out. You're only cheating yourself smile

The months of the Islamic calendar start and finish based on lunar cycles. So the month of Ramadan ends when the new moon is seen.

The new moon was visible last night (as per the screenshot above) so Eid is (or should be) today.

HTH smile

Eid Mubarak to those celebrating it!

I found Ramadan to be a lot easier than I was expecting this year. Ended up joining a 24 hour gym so so instead of sleeping for a couple of hours before sehri I just went down and had a good workout. Avoided the usual plethora of fried food for iftari as much as I could. Took 3 days off in the second week as I was away for a friends wedding so got those to catch up on at some point.

Highly amused by the amount of mosques (including my local one) who first said Eid would be Tuesday and then backtracked last minute last night. I've heard reports of scuffles in a few mosques in Bradford and one in Leeds as people disagreed on what day to do Eid. Absolute idiots!

Indeed, I too am keen to read the facts regarding this.

Defies logic and sense to me, but maybe religion can prove me wrong...............
Or kill you if you don't agree?

Lots of anger in Birmingham today about Star City apparently banning non muslims from its Eid celebrations. Anyone got any light to shed on this?
