A good quality watch ?
Yes. A good quality Swiss watch will last a lifetime*.

It will break down every 2-3 years, requiring a £350+ repair, but it will still last a lifetime.

Depreciating asset, needs regular servicing then ages quickly and requires heavy and expensive maintenance as parts begin to break and sag, fluids dry out. Bad idea.

Funnily enough, I was going to add to my earlier email, "and some of them look better than new as they've aged beautifully and have a lovely depth of shine, especially the brown and tan, that you can only get after many years".

Also, you can tell that well looked after 'old' shoes were an investment as people just bin cheap pairs and buy another.
^^ This.

New shoes are rarely properly polished to a decent shine. I've a pair of Oxford toecap Church's which needed a proper bulling when I bought them to bring them up to an acceptable standard. People who think shoes look good when new don't know what 'good' looks like.

In contrast I've got a Tustings holdall which I've had for about 10 years that looks better and better with age. It's a patina thing.

O/P. I got an unexpected £1000 mid 90's bought this second hand. Worn it nearly every day since, and it's now worth over £2500

Engine swap did that... Lack of funds now prevents further more extravagant upgrades.

Shoes for me - I have pairs that after 20 years are still as good as new. Just usual care and the odd heel/sole replacement.
I love nice shoes and appreciate what you say. In fact I think the same. Lately I've started wearing a 12 year old pair, polished up lovely and in isolation as good as new. THEYRE NOT! Put them next to a new pair and it's obvious. They look good for they're age but we are fooling ourselves to think a 12 or 20 year old pair of shoes ( unless unused) can look as good as new. It's impossible.
yes
I get about 3 years out of a pair of Church's until they are consigned to the "Only to be used when main shoes are being resoled/healed" store.

Pots and pans and Knives are another good 'Once in your life' purchase.

I have a set of Mayer pans bought for my 21st. Still rocking strong today and at least one is used almost every day.

Knives. Get a good set and a proper steel and you shouldn't have to buy again.

Cutlery is another again still on the same set that is well over 17 years old and showing no signs of ware.
